Brooklyn-bred Cyndi Lauper sounds like no other singer on the current scene. She may be the finest female junk-rock vocalist since the heyday of the great Maureen Gray.

Though she’s never received the praise showered on performers like Madonna for constantly reinventing their sound, it’s no coincidence that Cyndi Lauper still manages to work and tour.

She’s So Unusual, a record that isn’t so much stuck in the ‘80s as it’s a simultaneous survey of what was brilliant and what could’ve been done better that decade.
