  • The Guardian

2018 - But there’s still a masterly emotional range: from simmering anger on FOH (“Boy you must be suicidal / Is that bitch right there beside you” scans with a chilling brilliance) to tender regret on My Heart.

Braxton fans who just want to hear their favorite alto turned tenor deliver something smooth and palatable to the ear will likely enjoy most of this edible short set.

  • Pitchfork

2018 - Sex & Cigarettes deals mostly in windswept textures—but without the high drama of some of her classic singles, like “Un-Break My Heart” or “Breathe Again.” Her performances are meditative, particularly on standout “FOH,” another piano ballad sung through clenched teeth.

2018 - It’s a depressing album, but not quite in the way that’s intended.

  • The Musical Hype

2018 - While Sex & Cigarettes is short, all eight of its songs are consistent, suiting her as an artist. She may not reinvent the wheel, R&B, or even herself, but this is a worthwhile, well-executed affair by all means.

  • The Young Folks

2018 - The songs sadly deteriorate quickly in quality ... Their sappiness is draining, and detracts from the sustained excellence of the album’s first half.

  • Renowned for Sound

2018 - With a smokey style that continues the great tradition of 90s R&B, Toni Braxton is showing the young ones how to effectively use past events in order to power a performance.

Braxton reminds the audience to be wary of love or else find themselves in her position of simultaneously feeling the lament of loss but also, the creation of heartfelt anthems for others like her.

  • The House That Soul Built

2018 - Sadly, the album peaks after the first two tracks. The remaining material drifts into somewhat breezy, generic, yet still serviceable R&B. It is often Braxton’s fiery delivery and bite which lifts the tracks.

2018 - There isn’t a single dud on Sex & Cigarettes. ... Sex & Cigarettes tells a story of pain, loss, love and regret and it’s one of the best albums Braxton has recorded over her lengthy career. For the first time it feels like Braxton is truly unfiltered and free, and she’s all the better for it.
