Sail Out

Sail Out is the debut extended play (EP) by American recording artist Jhené Aiko, released on June 19, 2013, through Def Jam Recordings. It was Aiko's first release under the label after leaving her contract with Sony Records in 2003. After leaving Sony Records, Aiko released her first mixtape Sailing Soul(s) (2011), independently; the mixtape featured appearances from well-known artists and was met with generally positive reviews and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. . In 2012, Aiko met with American record producer and vice president of A&R at Def Jam No I.D., who ended up signing Aiko to his Artium Records imprint, through Def Jam. -Wikipedia

Sail Out leaves you searching for emotion where it isn’t. Instead there is a glazed-over blankness to her delivery that does these bare-by-design songs little favors.

It's the high point of an EP showcasing the adorable stoner flow that got the best line on Drake's last LP ("I love me enough for the both of us," on "From Time"), and it proves Aiko is more than a hook singer. If her writing is still a work in progress, it's progress that's worth watching.

she doesn’t overwhelm with talent like Lamar does, her performances — like much of Sail Out — merely “just right.”

Thing is, this lazy, hazy boat trip to the hip side of R&B only goes up and down the coast, so take Aiko's short intro as more of a "pinner" than a "fat blunt," as they say.

On this half-hour, seven-song EP, she never breaks a sweat, by design. It's rigidly confined in both pace (downtempo) and vocals (a two-note drone).

At its best, the California singer offers sweet but forgettable elevator music, a major label-backed product that never fails in taking advantage of her alluring physical image.

Sail Out certainly makes me excited for the possibility of Aiko’s forthcoming full length studio album.

The fact that this record features Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and Vince Staples means it is worth checking out for hip hop fans anyway; that it's actually a brilliant listen makes it all the better.

Aiko remains an intriguing artist. But if Sail Out is the appetizer for the upcoming LP release, one hopes the main course doesn't arrive rushed.

Sail Out as a whole, but especially Bed Peace featuring Childish Gambino, show Aiko's undeniable potential as the next great R&B artist.

Overall, the EP was good like her previous project and features. Only thing I wish is that she had more new tracks. I need something to ride me over while waiting for Souled Out!

The music is sparing and moody with touches of ambient sounds - showcasing Aiko's sultry vocals. At just over 30 minutes, you'll find yourself listening to this over and over to get more.

The unique production style compliments Jhene Aiko’s lethargic vocal but when Jhene does decide to let her guard down and push her vocals to vulnerable places it creates the best moments on this project that are worth revisiting over and over.
