  • Consequence of Sound

In September, Highly Intoxicated was released on the free online mixtape platform Datpiff, establishing Juicy J’s return to the medium. Packed with features from rap royalty and promising newcomers, club-friendly bangers, trap rap, ego grooming, and casual misogyny, it was classic Juicy J. His new album, Rubba Band Business, is, unfortunately, more of the same.

  • Hot New Hip Hop

Although Juicy does have entertaining solo tracks like “A Couple” and “Hot As Hell,” the rest of his unaided songs feel a bit stagnant . . . The features and the production are the best parts of Rubba Band Business, and while Juicy shows flashes of brilliance, he ultimately falls short of creating the album that we know he’s capable of.

While Rubba Band Business: The Album is far from the iconic and groundbreaking material this man has created over his storied career, Juicy still champions a project fans of the Memphis rap legend can still find appetizing in a few morsels.

  • The Guardian

Memphis rapper Juicy J is an artist renowned for bangers rather than lyrical depth, as is the case on his fourth studio album . . . The puerile misogyny is unfortunate (Drop a Bag ends by shaming women who post suggestive photos on social media), but this is largely a straightforward collection of bold, egotistical hip-hop tunes.

In terms of the lyrics, well, there’s not really a lot going on besides sex, drugs and self-aggrandisement, a fact that has never bothered his regular listeners, and they are the ones that this is aimed squarely at, rather than attracting a new audience. Then again, anyone coming to this with no prior knowledge may well be impressed.

Time has passed by many artists who were unable to keep up in an ever-evolving musical and cultural landscape, but Juicy J continues to defy the hourglass with Rubba Band Business, an album that is as sonically fresh as it is entertaining. Typically, the subject matter may be predictable and he's seldom got new tricks on display, but Rubba Band Business plays to Juicy J's strengths and succeeds in highlighting the best of what he has to offer. From rowdy selections geared for the trap, to up-tempo affairs that cater to the clubs, Juicy J shows no signs of rust or regression on Rubba Band Business. It's an album that is indicative that the O.G. has more than enough juice left in the tank, with no signs of running dry anytime soon.

The best word to describe this album is consistent. It flows really well, literally feeling like it flies by when you hear it in its entirety. Juicy doesn’t deviate from what he does best on it, something Juicy J fans will appreciate. For those who aren’t his fans, you will still enjoy it, as it does mimic majority of the hip hop music you hear today. All in all, the trippy king delivers once again in ‘Rubba Band Business’, as he continues to fly under the radar when it comes to galvanizing hip hop fans everywhere.

  • Legends Will Never Die

Overall, this was well worth the 4 year wait. There are some weak moments, but the production bangs & Juicy sounds energetic as ever for the most part.

  • The Musical Hype

Rubba Band Business is well worth the wait, chocked-full of bangers. Over the course of 13 tracks it’s literally banger after banger after banger.
