All the best to Lauren Alaina, and good for her for being able to stick her nose past the country radio female embargo, and for releasing a song and album that attempts to say something. But these type of songs aren’t the leadership in the mainstream we see from Kacey Musgraves, Natalie Hemby, Brandy Clark, or Lori McKenna.

The album is proof of the maturing the Georgia-native has gone through and results in a genuine piece of art.

But she’s the kind of artist, and this is exactly the sort of record, that we need to be successful in 2017. This album has something to say, and it speaks to that ever narrow demographic so desperately courted by country’s mainstream in a way that’s both real and understanding.

  • The Young Folks

Overall, Road Less Traveled is a mixed bag of an album. The tight production does nothing to hide the fact that songwise, the album is very uneven. When it’s good, it’s ridiculously good but the majority of the songs are middle of the road to outright bad.

Road Less Traveled sounds slick and sounds absolutely amazing, even if the lyrics falter at points.
