RELAPSE
|RELAPSE
Relapse is the sixth studio album by American rapper Eminem. The album was released on May 15, 2009, under Aftermath Entertainment, Shady Records, and Interscope Records. It was his first album of original material since Encore (2004), following a four-year hiatus from recording due to his writer's block and an addiction to prescription sleeping medication. Recording sessions for the album took place during 2007 to 2009 at several recording studios, and Dr. Dre, Mark Batson, and Eminem handled production. Conceptually, Relapse concerns the ending of his drug rehabilitation, rapping after a non-fictional relapse, and the return of his Slim Shady alter-ego. -Wikipedia

I can't truly dig Relapse
-
Rolling Stone
The power of Relapse comes from Em aiming his beat-downs at his truest target, himself.
-
Hip Hop DX
Relapse is the last time we’ve seen Eminem’s love for words meet his unbridled creativity in a way what’s musically palatable, and it deserves more respect.
-
Genius
it’s an interesting record in and of itself
-
The Early Registration
an enjoyable and highly entertaining roller coaster ride, the likes of which we may never see created again
-
Consequence of Sound
enjoyable enough to listen to
-
The Guardian
as Relapse's highlights prove, it's when he talks about himself that he really grabs your attention

a record that was incredibly good when it should have been exceptionally great
-

it might be as close to real as rap gets
-
All Music
Relapse isn't really about what Eminem says, it's about how he says it.
-
BBC
Typically uncompromising and full of characteristically spiky humour.
-
Soul in Stereo
And while there’s much to love about Relapse, I wish there would have been more progression instead of regression.
-
AV Music
It’s less a relapse than a rehash, less a comeback album than the kind of album artists need to come back from.
-
Entertainment Weekly
Relapse’s real resonance comes from the fragile, harrowing genius that lies behind that painted-on grin
-
Hip Hop Speakeasy
“Relapse” was the last great body of work Em has to offer
-
Clash Music
‘Relapse’ is no disappointment
-
Antiquiet
an album where no stone is unturned, no combination of words has escaped forensic scrutiny
-
Drowned in Sound
Relapse is less 12 steps than a stumbling one backwards
-
All Hip Hop
The vibe is fresh yet nostalgicthe ideal arrangement for a successful comeback. Em’s new album is a potent product, its time we all relapse.
-
Hip Hop Speakeasy
I feel comfortable believing that “Relapse” was the last great body of work Em has to offer – the rest will be sweet icing on the cake, and hey, who doesn’t like icing?
-
LA Times
an impressively focused and clever work
-
Beats per Minute
without a doubt worth purchasing
-
Radar Bad
should be held in just as high regard as his earlier shit
-
The Ratings Game
This album is very sloppy, and at times, the album is absolutely ridiculous.
-
Patrick's Music Blog
Relapse is really one of the oddest and most interesting looking back on it.
-
Rock NYC
a very strong suite of songs
-
Prefix Magazibe
It’s a slickly produced rap album with moments of greatness and others of mild discomfort.
-
The Quietus
And that's where Relapse triumphs, not in presenting a flawless body of work but in making Eminem interesting again.
-
A Different World
This is one of my favorite CDs EVER… Its done very well, I like EVERY SONG on this CD.
-
RTE
He may be recycling ideas to a certain extent, but he still delivers them in a mostly original manner - and that's what makes Eminem special.
-
DUBCNN
Relapses greatest moments are on par with anything from the MCs back catalogue
-
MTV
The result is an album that simply mimics what was already getting tired in 2004. Next.
-
Planet Ill
The precision of a Dre beat with Em’s lyrical dexterity bouncing over top is beyond complimentary.
-
No Ripcord
Relapse is billed as a return to form, but it plays more like a departure note.
-
Broken Cool
"Relapse" is better than "Encore" but pales in comparison to the well thought out concepts and quality of lyrics found on "The Slim Shady LP", "The Marshall Mathers LP" and "The Eminem Show."
-
COOL SHIT IN THE CROSSHAIRS
Based on what I’ve heard here both musically and lyrically I think Eminem and Dre should’ve called it Tombstone instead of Relapse.
-
Pop Matters
All in all, Relapse is not much more than a brightly polished turd of old-hat hate, incompatible with the direction society is headed.
-
The Wire
It combines everything that made the rapper famous in the first place: celebrity bashing, twisted humour, awesome lyrics and perfectly produced beats, courtesy of Dre.
-
Scene
His shady past may inform Relapse, but Em sounds most persuasive when he's hoping for a sober future.
-
definearevolution.com
Relapse was lyrically sound in some areas, which is likely the only saving grace, but for the most part, this album doesn't have many highlights. Was it really THAT bad? Yes. Yes it
-
Gumbo Monster
As a fan though what more can be asked for but a hot album, and he delivered, not his best, but back on the right track towards getting there.
-
Independent
The album quickly becomes drably repetitive, while its dated tone is emphasised by the return of Dr Dre as producer.
-
trshady.com
The flow and lyricism are peerless, yet often times there are songs that make a lot of multis just by stringing random words together. Yet the production is solid and the tone, while not always agreeable, is always honest.
-
Broken Cool
Em's wordplay is something to be cherished by Hip-Hop fans, but this album could have been trimmed down
-
Nappy Afro
This Relapse is a good thing indeed.
-
i Hip Hop
Relapse being the perfect title for this album, as he reverts back into his comfort zone of material that made him so successful in the beginning of his career
-
Byron Crawford
I'm surprised at how much I liked this album.
-
Song Stealer
Just when people thought Marshall couldn't get any worse, he did, with the horrendous sixth album Relapse.
-
The Telegraph
Funny and furious, the album is a virtuoso display to make young pretenders (like Asher Roth) sound like rank amateurs.
