Rare

American singer Selena Gomez released her third solo album—Rare—on January 10, 2020, through Interscope Records. Gomez herself was the executive producer for this album, working alongside many notable names such as The Monsters and Strangerz. The album is described by the singer as being a representation of her diary from the last couple of years.

Rare features dance-pop and midtempo pop sounds, taking influence from electronic, R&B, and Latin pop. The themes generally talk about self-empowerment, self-love, self-worth, and self-acceptance. Kid Cudi and 6lack make guest appearances on the album. Read more about Selena Gomez’s new album reviews here!

Some of the songs are catchy, yes, but there’s nothing to be found at the heart of this album. After many long years of artistry, it is disappointing to think that Rare is all Gomez can bring to the table.

While the lyrics are a little basic, there’s some personal stuff here and mixed with the catchy vocals, it’s an album that’s sure to have a few of these tracks hit high up the charts this year.

Selena Gomez has never sounded more like her bestie Taylor Swift than she does on her new “Rare,” but Gomez’s catchy songs dig into deeper subtexts than where Swift usually goes – echoes of physical and mental health issues and her time in rehab. And there are also several rather obvious references to her protracted and complicated relationship with Justin Bieber.

Overall, there is a lot of depth on Rare, whether it be through the lyrics or the melodies. .We experience a lot of feelings and are given many messages to help us as we go through our own journeys in life. In addition, the music on each track was eccentric and creative – from handclapping to electric guitar solos, there were a lot of unique moments! The album’s title definitely serves it justice, as this is not an album that you come across every day; it was well worth the wait.

Rare proves that when she has strong songs and the producers get a little weird, she's just enough outside the mainstream to sound fresh. Add in some deeply felt and real emotion like she does here, and it verges on being something special, maybe her best record yet. If it isn't that, it's at least her most interesting one yet, and that's something fans of the homogenized pop scene of the era should celebrate.

The album consistently alludes to wreckage in Gomez’s past but errs on the breezy side, mostly exploring the freedom and relief of life on the other side of the trauma.

  • Teen Vogue

Selena’s album feels like a nod to something like that idea, because the songs on Rare don’t really cover new feelings, though sometimes they introduce new feelings about the old ones. Rare, a competent mainstream album, is a muted club-pop record with the kinds of blurry songs that play during the party scene of a coming-of-age drama as the outsider heroine makes her way through the crowd and the clutter.

“Rare” is one of the best pop albums to be released in recent memory, and — as it does for artists ranging from Robyn and Charli XCX to Max Martin’s more adventurous productions — it feels like that term does a discredit to this sophisticated, precisely written and expertly produced music.
