Radical was a massive step for the band’s career, and I can’t wait to see what they come out with next.

Radical is an absolute hit, and Every Time I Die clearly have their feet on the gas pedal.

Radical positions them not just as forebears but as peers, whose new music is just as forward-thinking as the newer metalcore bands that are shaping the genre's latest wave. At this point, calling Every Time I Die "veterans" is an understatement. They're an institution.

Nine albums in, Radical carries on a form that arguably hasn’t dipped for two full decades now. Others may have taken shots at the crown in the years since Low Teens, but this record proves EVERY TIME I DIE won’t be giving up their throne any time soon.

Radical is by no means a reinvention or revelation for the band, but I wouldn't want it to be. In refusing to fix what ain't broke, ETID prove themselves once more as the reigning king of their peculiar, blood-splattered bouncy-castle. I think I can speak for everyone when I say: thank fuck for that.

Every Time I Die has is as focused and committed to vision as it’s ever been with Radical, perhaps the most complete album in the band’s heralded career. It’s crushingly heavy and highlighted by chunky, pummeling riffs from Jordan Buckley and Andy Williams, the thrashed-out frenetic energy spread across 16 songs that do not quit. This is a record meant for repeat visits — just make sure you take the time out to really listen to what the band has to say.

The “right timing” element would be a great part of its success; Every Time I Die will not win an Academy award for Radical, because there sadly isn’t a category for their immaculate heavy music. However, they have gone: “To Infinity….And Beyond”, they have the right timing now to unleash this monster upon the world and they have set their laser from stun, to kill.

If a band is capable of saving people’s lives, one show at a time, then I’m pretty confident ETID are the ones.

I could wax lyrical about each and every one of the 16 tracks across Radical, but the truth is this record is so dense and rich with content that we would be here for hours and hours. Radical, in its purest form, is exactly what its title states. An almost hour-long romp from one of metalcore’s most beloved and consistent artists; Every Time I Die have achieved the almost-impossible in somehow crafting the strongest album of their already-lauded career 23 years into it, and it’s fucking Radical. It’s an album that demands to be experienced; an absolute masterclass of the genre – and one of the best records of the year by far.

There is just so much growth on this album, it features all the classic ingredients that make Every Time I Die what they are. But Radical is so much more than that, it has been carefully crafted into a neat package of downright historic hardcore meets heavy rock.

Of course, it quickly bleeds into that soundtrack of metallic hardcore, stoner groove, punk attitude mixed up with the full range of Buckley’s vocal armoury bringing the brutal Radical to the devastating conclusion that it demands.

Every Time I Die are one of the most consistently high-performing bands in the heavy music world, and ‘Radical’ is yet another trophy that they can place on their now overflowing mantle. Combine their clear mastery of the craft with the weighty, crystal clear production skills of audio wizard Will Putney, and there was no way this was ever going to be a bad record.

With tracks that utilise dizzying, pinballing rhythm sections, to those that will floor listeners with the sheer force of the breakdowns, and some more radio friendly moments to boot, ETID know how to perfectly balance a hardcore album that prevents any listener desensitation to a barrage of heaviness. The fact that the band still sound so fresh on album number nine is a testament to the quality songwriting skills possessed by Every Time I Die.

Their sound is mercurial, ever-evolving and never settling into a pattern from moment to moment as chaos is allowed to reign. It requires some stamina to piggyback on the white-hot anger that surges from 'Radical', but if you stick with it, then it's one hell of a ride.

  • Metal Trenches

fter seven albums and twenty-three years together as a band, one had to wonder if Every Time I Die was starting to lose steam or going to rehash too many ideas. The answer to this is a definitive no, as they’ve delivered a lengthy album filled with the types of high flying hardcore and rock ‘n roll that has come to define their discography while still providing some unexpected twists and turns. There are a few minor bumps in the road, but overall this is another A showing and an album I expect to get a lot of mileage out of for years to come.

We Go Together is not only one of ETID’s most audacious songs to date, it’s also a closer that’ll leave you speechless. It’s industrial riffs, middle-eastern inspired bridge and use of dissonance provides a chaotic energy that has rarely been seen since Converge’s Jane Doe. Yet again, it seems Every Time I Die has outdone themselves.

The amount of variety here is impressive on its own, but what makes it spectacular is the way it sustains momentum on a record that, at 16 tracks, could easily have dragged or been stuffed with filler. Whatever your current album of the year is, ‘Radical’ is going to give it a run for its money.

  • Exclaim!

With one of the most uncompromising and sophisticated discographies in heavy music, it's hardly surprising that Every Time I Die move into their third decade of existence with an emphasis on refinement and range over unnecessary risks. Rather than fix what isn't broken, Radical finds the group doubling down and levelling-up their expansive, swaggering metalcore in every way possible.

At this stage of their career, Every Time I Die has nothing to prove. They have outlasted all the trends that hardcore music has endured over the years and always risen to the top of the pack, doing their own thing in their own way time and time again.

Once again, it’s impossible to fault this album. These guys are just flawless with every single release and like a fine, chaotic wine they just get better with age.

No matter if you’re an early era ETID fan or you are into the more recent releases “Radical” is the album to unite all fans into one joint faction. Mind boggling guitar riffs and overdriven, grindy bass runs mix perfectly with bombastic drum beats and razor like vocals which will captivate listeners while punishing their senses. Don’t be left out in the cold this fall as “Radical” may not the album you want but it’s the album you NEED!

Radical concentrates those five years of social disarray and capitalistic chaos into the Buffalo group’s most vicious and evocative album yet, laden with brutally intense riffage and visceral, incendiary rage.

Radical has all of the mathy riffage, radiant melodies, and neck-snapping energy of a group fresh out of the basement. It also has the emotional maturity and brinksmanship of a seasoned crew who know which buttons to push and for how long, and it's in between those two persuasions that the album achieves greatness.

Was the wait for this album worth it? Definitely! Every Time I Die’s sound and music is quite unique and with Radical they have released another fantastic album. We can only hope that the next one won’t take five years. On the other hand, if we then get another hour of aural bliss, it might well be worth the wait.

On Radical, the New York-based hardcore five piece sound better than I’ve heard them from the standpoints of musicianship, lyricism, and songwriting. Fear not, friends; Every Time I Die are as heavy as ever, and it’s only a matter of time before they bringing this album to live in circle pits around the world.
