Sonically, the record is on par with what Sonic Youth achieved circa Sister, which makes sense considering Kim Gordon served as Pretty's co-producer.

Pop Matters
One is left feeling nothing short of gobsmacked, and that my friends, is a good thing.

Unexpected Great Music
It’s a shame Hole didn’t continue on the punk path, because for a very short time, they were more punk than Nirvana.

MTV
Looking back a quarter-century later, it’s one well worth following.

Drunken Werewolf
Ultimately this is a marmite record. Some people hate the distorted production and nonsensical gutter lyrics. Far more should love and cherish it as a groundbreaking attempt to put social insolence to record. I certainly do.
-
All Music
The jagged white noise and buzzing guitars articulate Courtney Love's pent-up rage as well as her lyrics, and while that might make the album difficult to absorb in one sitting, it also makes it a singular achievement.

Only Solitaire
Have to take Courtney's word for it - I don't see that much "inside" here.

Ultimate Guitar
From the opening roar of 'Teenage Whore' to the closing drone of 'Pretty On The Inside/Clouds' (two tracks in one), Pretty On The Inside is a well crafted, enthralling and highly original album.

The Los Angeles Alternative Rock band debut remains a seminal album of the “Riot grrrl” movement.

Pop Lifer
Second in an irregular feature on nuggets of pop culture that have been largely buried by time, but deserve to be digged up again.
-
Spin
An album that starts out with a tune called "Teenage Whore" and gets louder, more brutal, and better is destined for a little corner of music history.

Teen Ink
I'd recommend this album to anyone, especially if you're a fan of sass, heavy breathing, laughing, and screaming along to strangely relatable lyrics.

The Sonic Post
This album remains a personal favorite for its raw energy and authentic portrayal of unadulterated rock music derived from Love’s musical insight into rock ‘n roll the way I like it.
