Unmasked in 2017 as Ghost’s mastermind, Tobias Forge trades in his papal regalia for a new persona on a darkly comic album that is lots of fun despite its flaws.

While Prequelle has its misses, there is more good than bad with this album—and those good moments are excellent and damn catchy. This is a band coming into global domination so the process is bound to have its hitches at times.

Everything seems more tight, more melodic, and dare I say upbeat than anything else they have done. For an album and band that revels on how terrible everything is, is sure is fun to listen to. Ghost is about to become one of those metal bands that can do anything they want.

There is a loose thematic element to Prequelle that weaves Yersinia pestis (the Black Death, to you laypeople) through the glamlicious pores of each track, lyrically, with heavy themes of death, loss and, of course, dark ages (then and now). May your eternal souls rock forevermore, amen!

‘Prequelle” touches the soul. The lyrics create a strong sense of building bonds with the music, the feeling and the expressions that make this album and as well as the idea of Ghost. If anything, ‘Prequelle’ might just open up bigger avenues for Ghost.

“Prequelle” is disappointing if you are looking for more of that signature Ghost stuff found on “Opus Eponymous” and “Meliora” but if you love the more atmospheric and poppier side of the band that is still catchy at the same time, then this album might just cut it for you.
