Her Mariah-like ability to deliver songs with maximum melismatic drama shows itself less often this time around, but when she does let loose, it’s a reminder that her amiable, Texas-girl exterior encases one of pop’s most forceful voices.

It's a strictly off-the-rack affair, a cynical run through current femme-pop clichés that does everything it can to bland Clarkson's essential talent.

Piece by Piece, is in many ways analogous to 1989. Clarkson, however, has been mining this territory since before Swift even landed her first record deal, and songs that should ostensibly inspire nostalgia (like the pointedly titled aerobics workout “Nostalgic”) instead feel like they just rolled off a conveyor belt.

a passable record that sounded more like the work of producer Greg Kurstin (Sia, Kesha, Adele) than the singer whose name and face graced its cover.

a contemporary but anemic-sounding conglomeration of pulsating electro-pop, orchestra-kissed ballads, and sweeping R&B—often doesn’t play to her strengths.

Rather than the rage of "Since U Been Gone" or the sass of "Walk Away" or even the wrenching pain of "Because of You," we get a much calmer, less excited Clarkson on "Piece by Piece," her first pop album in four years.

Kelly Clarkson's latest offering – and her last contracted with RCA – is an album not of song, but of sound – and an assault on the senses.

. . . but overall Piece by Piece sounds a shade too desperate, which means it winds up having the opposite effect than intended: instead of sounding like a new start, Clarkson sounds a little bit behind the times.

  • RENOWNED FOR SOUND

The one thing that the album lacks is soul, coming off as being more of a pop product than a labour of love.

This album is melodic and has some great sounds, not too over filled with hooks, there’s some great writing working with these things

Overall, the album has its moments where I would have preferred to have Clarkson herself write the songs, but she opted to take a backseat this time around to focus on her family without sacrificing her love of music and, to me, that’s both honorable and a big risk that mostly paid off.

Overall, Piece By Piece is a marked improvement over 2011’s Stronger that finds Kelly Clarkson reminding us why she is the original American Idol: that voice, and her ability to use it to make songs her own.

This is her best since her 2004 blockbuster album, Breakaway. Stronger won her her second Best Pop Vocal Album in 2012, and My December features some of the best tracks of her career, but Piece By Piece has an unparalleled variety to it.

The takeaway from “Piece By Piece” is that Clarkson needs a different team around her. She’s around people who are talented, yeah sure – but they are not making the best decisions while working with one of the better voices out there.
