By not overextending or aspiring to be anything more than a rock ‘ n’ roll pure-play, Pearl Jam has created something that will resonate far deeper. You don’t have to define “the times” to be true to them.

It’s getting at a return to form, sure, and it proves that their average work is still better than average (a good earmark of a solid outfit), but you’ll never get the feeling listening to Pearl Jam that it’s the fourth great album by a great band, rather another good album by a band that might be getting long in the tooth.

Despite turning their back on the machine, I can't help but wish they made more accessible music, but with Pearl Jam it didn't just exhibit that the band still mattered and was evolving, but was potently alive.

what makes Pearl Jam such an effective record is that it can be easily enjoyed as sheer music without ever digging into Vedder's lyrics. Song for song, this is their best set since Vitalogy, and the band has never sounded so purposeful on record as they do here, nor have they ever delivered a record as consistent as this.

After years of trying to live up to one of their early statements-- "there ain't gonna be any middle anymore"-- it's disappointing to find them steering the ship back toward the center.

One thing I can say with certainty, though, is that Pearl Jam is one hell of a rock album delivered by one hell of a rock band. Word is, Pearl Jam is back. Truth is, they never went anywhere.
