  • Pitchfork

The country icon’s latest is a loose concept album about the American road, a scattershot travelogue that houses some of her best-ever songwriting.

Miranda Lambert’s Palomino is a damn fine record with 15 tales of love and the American Dream in her trademark powerful, declarative yet tender voice.

Palomino may not become a critical darling a la The Marfa Tapes or The Weight of These Wings, but it offers an album-length look at what makes Lambert's best songs work so well: a healthy dose of freewheeling fun. As she puts it herself, sometimes Lambert just needs to act up.

It’s like getting to sit around a campfire with Maria Callas. Lambert can be equally captivating in a stadium, a Vegas thee-ay-ter, an awards show, or sipping a Corona on a dusty desert porch. For all Nashville’s drawbacks, that’s a type of diva they don’t make in many other towns.

Lambert sounds sultry and dangerous on "Actin' Up," sneers through "Country Money," and tears it up with the B-52's on "Music City Queen," an ode to the denizens of a tacky riverboat. The different sounds and scenes add up to a rich, complex album, one where Lambert finds the perfect blend of the writerly The Weight of These Wings and the breeziness of Wildcard.

This is the first of her albums on which Lambert has received a producer credit, and aptly it is the album which feels the most like a synthesized version of her entire person – on one hand, she is a traditionalist country aficionado; on the other hand, she likes to team up with the band that did “Love Shack” and just kind of see what will happen. And it’s this combination of sides that makes Miranda Lambert, and this album, special.

All in all, an album that showcases the numerous talents of Miranda, one that will be on heavy rotation here for a very long time and may well steal the crown as my favourite from this multi-award winning artist who recently wowed us here in the UK with her incredible set at C2C… she doesn’t need to be a cowboy to be the queen as far as I’m concerned.
