Show All-
NME
2017 - ‘Pacific Daydream’ is all carefree, expertly crafted pop, free of irony and all the better for it. Lock the doors, crack open a cold one, and enjoy an endless summer with Weezer.
-
Consequence of Sound
2017 - Pacific Daydream just happens to be very shiny middle ground, reminding us that somewhere in Rivers Cuomo, there’s still an East Coast kid listening to the radio and fantasizing about life in Los Angeles. For the band to be at its full potential, though, the songwriter needs to reflect more on the takeaways of experiences rather than the moments themselves.
-
Pitchfork
2017 - in spite of its name, mostly just gives you a feeling of being nowhere
-
Spin
2017 - It’s disappointing, then, that this impulse of creative energy has resulted in a record that feels flat and strained.
-
Rolling Stone
2017 - its best moments – “Weekend Woman” could be Weezer’s “Good Vibrations” with is everything-but-the-sink hooks and a catchy, Lady Gaga–like bridge – gamely make up for the places where Pacific Daydream sounds like Weezer by Numbers
-
Soul Feeder
2017 - In short, Pacific Daydream is the worst Weezer album I’ve ever had to sit through.
-
Pretty Much Amazing
2017 - At the end of it, this record is a mixed bag. Fans of Weezer’s poppier side will find plenty to like. Whereas fans of Weezer’s more well regarded records will wish they chose another producer.
-
Classic Rock
2017 - Prolific indie-rock vets keep the oddball bangers coming
-
Slant Magazine
2017 - These songs demonstrate the precise flourishes that have always marked his music but often go unheralded: his ease with nimble, catchy hooks; the effortlessness with which his songs build momentum; his ear for harmonies, which does indeed owe a debt to his beloved Beach Boys.
-
Drowned in Sound
2017 - With at least half of these songs, there is almost nothing to say, nothing to be baffled by, nothing to argue about, and for that sad, whimpering reason, Pacific Daydream can probably be called Weezer’s worst album.
-
Music OMH
2017 - a solid record which should satisfy fans
-
Exclaim!
2017 - The lyrics add up to little more than cheese ball pickup lines ... Weezer have had their share of ups and downs over the years, but Pacific Daydream finds them at their most clunky yet.
-
Cryptic Rock
2017 - For its sunny disposition and accomplished alt-pop sensibility.
-
The Jakarta Post
2018 - These songs are not cool. These songs are, however, very catchy. They are well-written corporate pop-rock by a band that may or may not have always done so, but we were too young to notice.
-
All Music
beneath its glossy surface, there's not only plenty of melody, but a perverse sense of humor that keeps the record from sounding too smooth and settled
-
The Sentry
2017 - Pacific Daydream is shallow, uninspired, and only shows that Weezer has lost its identity as a band.
-
The Fire Note
2017 - Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo continues his infatuation with the Beach Boys while mixing his power chord anthems with mellower pop inclinations.
-
The Guardian, University of California San Diego
2017 - Its effort is admirable as the band continues to churn out music after music until the right one sticks. “Pacific Daydream” feels like a filler — before something much greater.
-
South Lab
2017 - For the most part, the songwriting is competent and Cuomo’s storytelling well refined.
-
The Young Folks
2017 - The rest of Pacific Daydream consists of dull pop songs that lacks any authentic guitar riff, or percussion.
-
Alt Press
2017 - It’s peppered with some of the band’s best songs in recent memory (notably “QB Blitz” and “Weekend Woman”) and some downright spectacular writing and playing from bassist Scott Shriner.
-
Popfection
2017 - All in all, this feels too soft to be a Weezer album
-
The Line of Best Fit
2017 - If you can let Pacific Daydream completely envelope you; throw you to the beach that instigated the album, then you’ll find sheer happiness here. If, however, you go in with any expectations of than that, you might find things a bit more difficult.
-
The Sound Board
2017 - This is a decent album overall
-
The Musical Hype
2017 - All in all, Pacific Daydream is an enjoyable Weezer album.
-
Iowa State Daily
2017 - everything about "Pacific Daydream" feels off, almost as if it wasn’t intended for a full album release at all
-
Stony Brook Independent
2017 - an album with good intentions, but sloppy means of carrying them out
-
Richer Sounds
2017 - a listenable album
-
The Fulcrum
2017 - Pacific Daydream is caught in between two worlds: on one hand, the record is a superb pop record full of windows-down summer anthems; on the other hand, it’s a subpar Weezer record which does little to satiate fans longing for the 90s-style riffs and structures that marked the so-called ‘return of Weezer’ between 2014 and 2016.
-
WTBU
I do think that it’s a fine album, but that’s as positive as I can really get.
-
Too Many Blogs
2017 - it’s still way below the mark that Weezer had reached with their past two albums
-
Newsday
2017 - the band’s skills and ambitions lead to an impressive set of California-dreaming songs
-
Overdrive
2017 - The record has its strengths, but the production is overdone at times and that hurts the album as a whole.
-
The Niles West News
2017 - a solid album that deserves a listen and more radio play beyond the one single, but I don’t think it should be included in the Weezer hall of fame
-
Scene Point Blank
2018 - while their newest record Pacific Daydream, offers a sunny, California vibe with decent songwriting, it gets close to the edge, but with not enough oomph to send it over
-
Varsity
2017 - an album entrenched in mediocrity
-
WRBB 104.9FM
2017 - Overall, Pacific Daydream was a let down ... it amounts to nothing other than just being standard, bland, least-common denominator pop rock
-
The Wood Word
2017 - “Pacific Daydream” will be forgotten.
-
Immortal Reviews
2017 - Weezer doesn't know what they want to be in Pacific Daydream, delivering some solid music but are prevented from really taking the songs all the way by the friction between form and meaning.
-
The Eagle and Child
2017 - Anyway, for the time being, if I’m looking for a latter-day Weezer album to fill the void during my drive home from work, I’ll probably stick with the fantastic throwback Everything Will Be Alright In the End (2014)*, which is nothing but straight-forward, unapologetic rock n’ roll.
-
The New Paltz Oracle
2017 - In just about every way, Pacific Daydream is the anti-Pinkerton: overly polished, unadventurous and devoid of personality.
-
WZND 103.3FM
2018 - Unfortunately, Pacific Daydream falls very short of what you’d expect from a band of this caliber.
-
The Student Playlist
2017 - The tentative rehabilitation of Weezer continues afoot with ‘Pacific Daydream’, a likeable but lightweight collection of guitar-pop.
-
ABC News
2017 - a return to pop that works
-
Spectrum Pulse
2017 - so blurry, insubstantial, and lacking the distinctive character of the best of both Weezer and The Beach Boys
-
The Brown Daily Herald
2017 - Weezer’s ‘Pacific Daydream’ album drop disappoints
-
CPHS News
2017 - Because of the overall underwhelming and confusing nature of most of these songs on this album and because most of these songs sound like the same cut-and-pasted template they used on the entire album.
-
Sound Words
2017 - a strong album, but not a strong Weezer album
-
ACRN
2017 - this album lacks personality and plateaus with music that is forgettable and too sunny for its own good
-
The Red & Black
2017 - “Pacific Daydream” is a summer-themed, pop-infused masterpiece. Weezer has successfully established a new sound, much more mainstream than its past music.
-
The Capstone 90.7
2017 - So if you’re new to Weezer and enjoy music that’s more on the chill side, definitely give the album a listen! If you’re an old fan and have anxiously been putting off listening to it, bite the bullet and listen; you might be disappointed, but still give it a try.
-
God is in the TV
2017 - I remain unconvinced that the majority of Pacific Daydream isn’t just Rivers doing it for a joke. It’s so generic and pitch-perfectly idiotic for it not to be.
-
Rukus
2017 - Unfortunately, they ended up with something closer to the fluffy flub of the forgotten 2009 effort Raditude and what could have been ten new Weezer songs for their ever-evolving collection has just become vacuous space on the record shelf while a little more patience from their hungry fans is tested.
-
Whip
2017 - it’s a quality piece of work. Nevertheless, one can’t help but crave more of a change as a Weezer fan in the modern era.
-
Edinborrow Now
2017 - This album is some of the band’s worst work.
-
Baeble Music
2017 - Yet in this album, not only do they alienate the die-hards of old, they fall short of delivering what they intend to be a modern pop opus.
-
Games, Brrraaains & A Head-Banging Life
2017 - Pacific Daydream is not going to be remembered as one of the better Weezer offerings unfortunately.
-
It's All Dead
2017 - a perfect pop album, joining the ranks of some of the year’s best
-
A Diverse Sound
It’s a simple, fun summer release, and it’s content to be nothing more than that.
-
Stomp and Stammer
2018 - It’s albums like Pacific Daydream that make me go back to my usual Weezer mantra, which is: First Two Albums Only.
-

2017 - Weezer’s return to form ceases with newest album
-
i99 Music Radio
This album continues to stay true to their typical sound in a way that sounds impeccable.
-
Salute
2017 - Pacific Daydream is not the worst Weezer album. It’s not the best either. Let’s just dub it King of the In-betweens.
-
Bloggers Gamut
2017 - The biggest crime this album makes overall is that it’s rather bland. Not one song provokes an emotional reaction
-

2017 - an album full of the melodic mastery and craftsmanship for which Weezer are known - is a record that navigates the uncertainty between reality and dreams

2017 - flawed but fun
-
Perfect Sound Whatever
2017 - Overall, “Pacific Daydream” feels as much like a step backward as it does not moving at all.
-
Alt Rock People
2017 - it holds up and sinks in after a few listens
-
Stereo Board
2017 - Maybe it wouldn’t hurt as much had it arrived a few years ago, but given that the ‘White Album’ exists it’s a bit of a kick to the kidneys.
-
The Heights
2017 - Each song on Pacific Daydream is a simple part of a puzzle representing the intricate subtlety of past versus present. With references, allusions, and hints at the past and a sound grounded in the 21st century, Weezer’s Pacific Daydream is truly otherworldly.
-
Savage Media
2017 - Be sure to check out Pacific Daydream to catch the Weezer melodies that you already love, as well as some cool new vibes!

The Top Tens
There are some definite high points and great moments throughout. I personally find the second half of the record to be better than the first half.
