  • The Lifestyle

Unlike her last offering, the songs here start a thought that doesn’t feel accomplished by the end of the songs. The songs suffer and feel like unfinished demos or overstated interludes. The album feels much like a work in progress.

The 23-year-old Atlanta singer’s slow-groove R&B plays out like a telenovela, feeling irresistibly fresh, messy, and human.

The Atlanta R&B star takes the genre back to the raw honesty of the '90s and noughties with this stellar, quietly subversive debut.

I think what makes Summer so special is that there are through-lines to hip-hop, there are through-lines to pop, there's kind of something for everyone's sensibilities. If you just like slow-burning, sexy R&B? She has something for you. But if you like the more upbeat, super polished poppy sounds? She has something for you as well.

Walker grows up in the album. She finds her voice and brings fans an album that is not for the weak-willed. Over It is not just an album — it’s a heartbreakingly beautiful composition about the ups and downs of life and relationships.

If Walker keeps this up, though, I have no doubt she will become a household name in the new decade. In the meantime, give Over It a try – it’s an album with no skipping required.

This, coupled with her narrative voice and lyrics, make her debut album a statement and suggests that the 23-year-old could soon become a staple of the R&B genre.

Over It’s obligatory ’90s R&B fan service includes a killer flip of Vegas singing trio 702’s “Get It Together” in the early highlight “Body,” where Walker informs a crush in line one that she has options, as if to inform you that she could be anywhere else in the world, so it’s extra special that she wants to spend her time with you.

With Over It, the Atlanta singer-songwriter is on point with a debut that's ultimately a contemplation on sexual politics and emotional availability.

While you would think such an approach to an album would come across as frustrating, I loved every second of what I heard!

The sonic imagery, the ability to transport listeners to worlds that twirl on axes of sound, is the pulsating heart of Walker’s music.

Over It ultimately feels like the final blow to a more than likely toxic relationship that probably needed to end anyway — the mercy stroke to a dying relationship that has been difficult to let go. More than anything, Summer’s collection of songs shows off her versatility and ability to switch between pure R&B, soul, and more pop-influenced R&B.

Although 18 songs, each song on average is about 2 minutes and never overstay it’s welcome. The whole project is 49 minutes giving it a complete listening experience without boring out the listener. I don’t consider this her debut but I must say I’m impressed with the 23-year-old.

This album has had a lot of mixed reviews but honestly, I believe it is one of the best albums of the year. Summer can take us on a tour of her mind and go through her love and her life all in 18 tracks which is hard to do when you've been through so much. I think this album is already empowering for women, but it also just sounds nice and has a lot of great samples. I am proud of Summer, this album is going to do great things.
