out of our heads

Out of Our Heads is the Rolling Stones' third British studio album and their fourth in the United States. Although they share the same title, the two have significant differences in the track listings. In the US, London Records released it on 30 July 1965 and it became the group's first number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. Decca Records released it in the UK on 24 September 1965, where it reached number two. -Wikipedia

It holds together better than any other Stones album up to that point ... Nothing was the same after this. Out of Our Heads also made it to No. 1, the first of nine Stones albums to reach that spot.

The Stones finally proved themselves capable of writing classic rock singles that mined their R&B/blues roots, but updated them into a more guitar-based, thoroughly contemporary context

Whilst “Satisfaction” consolidated things, it’s “The Last Time” which represents the peeling back of their vestigial R&B persona, to become something that would be both beautiful and scary.

The album’s title was something of a taunt: “Yes, we’re as crazy as you think we are and probably high, as well.” A line had been drawn in the sand, and there was no doubt where the Stones stood.

They are still reliant on tough rhythm and blues and soul covers – their version of Don Covay’s Mercy Mercy is great – but Jagger and Richards’ songwriting is blossoming: antagonistic on Heart of Stone, gleefully hymning the arrogance of youth on I’m Free.

Included some great singles material like the riff-filled, stompingly loud "Satisfaction," which was the band's first #1 hit and one of the biggest songs of the entire decade

This is a woefully inconsistent and ultimately mediocre (not bad, just ok) album buoyed by three incredible songs.

'Out Of Our Heads' doesn't reach the ultimate heights later Stones albums would, but it's just so very easy to listen to and groove away to. An excellent record indeed.
