Oral Fixation, Vol. 2

Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (Spanish: Fijaci n Oral, Vol. 2) is the seventh studio album and second English language album by Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira, released on 28 November 2005, by Epic Records. After attaining international success with her third studio effort, Laundry Service (2001), Shakira decided to create a two-part follow-up record. She released the project as the follow-up to her sixth studio effort Fijaci n Oral, Vol. 1, with which she had attained international success five months prior.-Wikipedia

Oral Fixation is the sound of an utterly unique voice in a uniform world.

Shakira’s English lyrics and performances still lack the confidence of her Spanish tracks, yet Oral Fixation manages to maintain the musical credibility that Fijacion Oral won back.

Vol. 2 is Shakira’s first album sung almost entirely in English—there are small bits of French, Italian, and even Arabic, but there’s not one word of Spanish.

Playful genre-mixing, skillful songwriting and a danceable mega hit. Mainstream pop can’t really get much better than this.

I've been accused of that before. But if I didn't call your attention to the best pop record of the year, I would be remiss in my duty.

. . . Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 is not only a markedly different album from Fijación Oral, but from every other record in her catalog -- or, most importantly, from any other pop album in 2005.

Although Oral Fixation is hardly the first time a Latina act has aimed straight for the middle of the North American road and nearly lost control of the wheel in the process, it’s among the most disappointing.

Something, a ballad lifted from Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 and suitably anglicised, whispers seductively in and fades out - but the overriding perception of OFV2 is one of disappointment.

With her latest release she not only jumps on the whole double album-turned-into-two-single-albums shtick that Nelly and System of A Down both utilized this year, but she ups the sales gimmick in a way neither of those artists could have . . . .

The album is baffling in the best possible way: unpredictable (the oompah “Hey You”), defiant (“as long as we can vote,” she sings on “Timor”), and steered by her unique warble.

Aside from a couple of songs carried over from Vol. 1, “Oral Fixation” is not at all a mere translation of her Spanish-language work. Shakira has written or co-written the lyrics in English

Although "Vol. 1" holds more unconventional songs, the rock songs on "Vol. 2" still have Shakira's own quirks. Along with her love songs, this time Shakira also looks beyond the domestic.

Containing a vast majority of musical genre and influential world tastes to the music, Shakira has made this a fasinating and exciting new CD.

Oral Fixation, Volume 2 is a diverse collection of work that includes a couple of notable collaborations and several different styles – but crucially, it lacks anything other than bland mainstream ‘appeal’.

The wish of Shakira to satisfy the English-speaking public leads to the loss of her 'roots' on this album.

It's not often that an artist, or an album, or a single line from a song can stop you short in your tracks. But Shakira does with this latest release.

Perhaps because the songs are in English rather than Spanish, the music moves closer to Anglo rock and pop, dipping into folk-rock, power ballads and the Cure.

Despite English not being a dominant language of hers, Shakira is still a solid songwriter as the themes from Vol. 1 carry over smoothly into the English-language Oral Fixation Vol. 2.

This album may not spawn a super-catchy hit like "Whenever, Wherever," but it sits worthily alongside 2001's Laundry Service, which introduced our heroine to the English-speaking world.

However, unlike the first volume, Oral Fixation Vol. 2 is less cohesive and many of the songs come off as unmemorable fillers.
