Ultimate Classic Rock
The Doobie Brothers lineup had always been in flux, but as the '70s bled into the '80s, they seemed like a completely different band.

All Music
Overall the songs and the performances just don't measure up.

It was the same sound that had lifted the Doobies to their greatest commercial success, but had also spelled their demise.

One Step Closer isn’t the best of the Brothers’ work, and it’s unlikely that even the band members themselves would claim otherwise, but if you’ve ever been a fan of the music McDonald helped make during his tenure with the Doobies, it’s still worth revisiting.

Daily Vault
With little to recommend and “Real Love” on a hits collection somewhere, there’s really no reason to grab this one unless you’re a completist or McDonald fan.

Sputnik Music
ONE STEP CLOSER was a huge letdown after the huge commercial and artistic success of 1978's MINUTE BY MINUTE.
