Missy wakes Aaliyah from one dream and sends her into another. It’s one where hip-hop gets seduced by R&B, and dives into a satin sea of sheets without removing its Tims.

Her sophomore effort, One in a Million, was my first musical taste of her sound, and eventually led me back two years prior to her debut. But her 1996 follow up solidified the musical trajectory that Aaliyah began to trail blaze.

That we still mourn Aaliyah’s loss after so long is a testament to not just her overall musical legacy, but also the enduring significance of One in a Million.

The seventeen-year-old could sell a sexy song like a pro, but these songs could have sold themselves — with writing by Missy Elliott and production by a then-unheard-of Timbaland, One in a Million unleashed the futuristic Virginia Beach funk that would soon take over the radio.

'One In A Million' is packed with solid songs, yet just lacks those one or two moments of genuine class to spark a higher rating and to make this any kind of essential set. Still, she was still very. very young at this stage.

Some might see it as lazy wordplay but, for those who know her and what her music means, there are no other words we could use! In a music world where there are copycats and bland artists, it is true the astonishing Aaliyah was.

It lays this stuttering beat, with no more than initial sprinkles of bass, Aaliyah’s soulful voice cut up, sweetened with the backing singers. Its restrained, spacey even in places, but nevertheless lovely, and a reminder of a much missed voice.
