Metro dropped Not All Heroes Wear Capes, a high-profile guest-filled album that builds on and creates a bigger version of the dark, hard-hitting production that has turned Metro into rap’s definitive producer of the last five years.

NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES is the ideal comeback for a renowned producer who took the better part of a year to further hone his craft. Rather than manufacturing a bloated project in an attempt to garner streams, Metro went slim and concise with a collection of songs that display his creative growth and range.

Metro Boomin's solo debut is a high school reunion where all the invited guests are devilishly inebriated.

. . . Metro Boomin should be praised for creating something that’s so consistently engaging. His dominance as hip-hop’s go-to-producer shows no signs of fading and we can only hope he avoids the retirement talk in the future.

. . . let’s celebrate: this year, a producer’s album hit #1 on the Billboard charts, and impressively, did so without a hit single.

Maybe the most impressive element of Not All Heroes Wear Capes as an album, is its cohesiveness sonically, as most of the records fluidly transition into the next. The beats Metro cooked up for this one were top notch throughout, adding some refreshing sounds to the current trap landscape.

  • Metr - Unruly Sounds

This album has been influenced largely by R&B and Orchestra. Metro found a way to explore those sounds and retain his style at the same time. His transition flow alone tells us he really took his time to create a coherent and complete project. The drums are newer and refreshing.

In 2018, Metro has been quieter than a mouse, opting to play the back while other producers like Murda Beatz and Tay Keith took over the game. With “Not All Heroes Wear Capes,” the Atlanta native looks to make his triumphant return, reminding us all that heroes don’t have to speak, either.

Overall the tape is a success, there are not too many features (nor too few), and every collaboration works well. The only disappointment is that it is not as good as the features would suggest.

This is an okay album. There aren’t any songs on here that stood out as being bad, but none of them really blew me away either. This project definitely has some of the best Trap production I’ve heard all year. Metro Boomin’ definitely deserves all they hype he gets.

On his official solo debut, hip-hop producer Metro Boomin gathers a team of familiar faces and serves up a shadowy collection of hypnotic trap nuggets on the chart-topping Not All Heroes Wear Capes. His work is typically addictive, as hazy atmospherics and popping beats lay the groundwork for the guest rappers to do their things.

‘NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES’ was a star-studded album that lacked cohesion, theme, purpose and content. There were scattered moments of beauty, as is to be expected when you place hip-hop’s biggest names in the ring together. Still, most of the tracks were forgettable, and this Metro Boomin’ project seemed to only retain quality on the Metro Boomin’ side.

In all, it’s a great album full of diversity, yet, it still could’ve been packed out with a couple other features and some more hard-hitting Trap-bangers. At the end of the day, Metro did what was asked of him; make “boomin” music.
