  • Pitchfork

Over the 19 tracks on the album’s deluxe edition, he tries on an array of styles and personas, but even during his biggest stretches he never sounds anything less than comfortable in his own skin.

    It is flatly uninventive.

Ne-Yo’s one of those first ballot hall of fame-type performers that no matter how much musical expectations shift, his level of execution impressively remains the same.

Ne-Yo may be a man of many talents, but his new album, Non-Fiction, makes it clear that the scope of those talents is limited.

Overall, the album itself is solid and enjoyable but as a body of work, it is not as good as some of his previous albums.

Ne-Yo turns from thoughtful lover to cheap pickup artist on his new album.

Ne-Yo aimlessly veers from fist-pumping with David Guetta and Pitbull to pimp-strolling with Jeezy and Juicy J.

Non-Fiction is a solid album with some really great tracks. It’s just the glut of filler than drag it down a notch.

Non-Fiction is robust with 20 tracks, which may hurt or hinder with regard to attention span. But Ne-Yo fans won’t be disappointed, as they will enjoy a solid new addition to the collection.

On one hand, the mixture of street-conscious slow-jams and soulfully spiced pop-dance entries shows his adeptness at crafting repertoire appealing to listeners across the board.

All told, Ne-Yo’s Non-Fiction isn’t bad. There are some decent songs, but they’re buried under a somewhat overused motif and heavy production.

He proves to be a somewhat uneven, yet still entertaining storyteller and listeners should look forward to more stories to come.

His new release Non-Fiction however, brings back hints of the original Ne-Yo yet still catering for fans who favour his more recent sounds.

This time he creates a pretty impressive album that is filled with “a group of true stories,” thus the title, Non-Fiction.

  • Exclaim!

Indicative of an underlying need to placate his various audiences, Non-Fiction — despite the loosely binding narrative — delivers an uneven synthesis of the sounds Ne-Yo had already been exploring rather than the promised straight up R&B record.
