with its engaging mix of styles it shows that Queen could still deliver a solidly crafted album even when stripped of the pomp and flamboyance that characterised their earlier work

Three top-notch songs in the form of We Are The Champions, Spread Your Wings and It's Late, and all three non-Freddie vocals are good, too. It's not a classic, but it's very respectable with some good solid material on it.

Yes, it’s fun, because many of the individual tracks are laser-guided belters, but it has no real cohesive identity.

At this point, Queen are leaning more and more and more towards the 'arena-rock champions' status, with an obligatory bunch of sing-along crowd-pleasers to confirm it.

They’re pretty far from their hard rock roots. That’s not a bad thing.

Apparently, the intention is that the long-tarnished glories of “tradition” will be repolished on the band’s hard pumice.

2017 - it is still a deeply satisfying album and one that would be one of their most complete, in the rest of their careers

But for me it is the best Queen album – the one that introduced me to the band as players and to their composing personalities; the one that made me look past the show-pony that strutted and fretted his hours on the stage, a limelight hog that for both good and bad was overtly the Queen image/voice/icon.

News of the World showcases a top band in peak form, and this new release from Hollywood Records ought to appeal to new fans and Queen die-hards alike.

a decision was made to return to the “rootsier” sound of their first three recordings for what would become News of the World. Even so, the album would still be embellished with rich multi-tracked arrangements, and all the molasses and razor blade textures that guitarist Brian May could muster.
