Drew's Reviews
the record invites you to listen. Then listen again. Perhaps, Switchfoot’s entire point behind making the album.
-
Hallels
the pride of this record is in the way the team takes Scripture and brings from them poignant applicable truths expressed in creative measures
-
Cryptic Rock
the messages are done tastefully, inspiring, kind, and considerate
-
Jesus Freak Hideout
but there's certainly enough here for everyone to release their breath and acknowledge that as long as these boys stick together
-
The Christian Beat
Every track is so different from the last in terms of style and intonation, yet a sense of happiness and freedom pervade them all.
-
All Music
a nicely cohesive album that lives up to the band's two-decades-long reputation for delivering heartfelt, uplifting pop/rock
-
California Rocker
One is left believing Switchfoot will never give up on acting the part of the still, small encouraging voice — in a world overflowing with ugly cacophony. Now, if only the world could learn to speak Switchfoot’s loving language.
-
Alt Corner
With nods to several genres, Switchfoot dabble intricately between the hallmarks of alternative rock, folk and experiment with the odd splash of EDM to a rapturous sense of achievement.
-
Digital Journal
Overall, this new album by Switchfoot is very versatile and distinct, and it proves that they are constantly evolving sonically and lyrically with their music. This is a bold and brave studio effort, where the band was not afraid to take risks, and these risks were well worth it in the end.

Native Tongue is the release that will prove them worthy of your time and adoration.

the newer ideas showcased in the album prove that the water in Switchfoot's creative well hasn't dried up or gone stale
-
Premier Praise
Native Tongue is one of the best albums Switchfoot has ever produced. And for a band who has been making music for more than 20 years, that’s quite an achievement.
-
The Daily Nebraskan
It’s a fan-friendly album that takes a familiar tone, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but is a little restricting.
-
Church Mag
Switchfoot’s Native Tongue is the multi-layered, slowly enveloping sonic wave of soulful expression that you’ve come to expect from Switchfoot. You won’t be disappointed.
-

Really, all the songs on Native Tongue are solid. It’s probably the most fun that I’ve had listening to a Switchfoot record in a decade.

Here we see Switchfoot push themselves into new styles and do things that we’ve never seen them do before, and for the most part, they absolutely nail it.

Their unique musical arrangements combining elements of rock, soul, grunge & pop, honest vocals and songs that don’t shy away from subjects that are sometimes difficult to discuss reaches hearts and souls of listeners with a foundation built on the promises of God.
-
mxdwn.com
It’s a disheartening effort from a band that’s always been so good at avoiding falling into the trap. It’s a sadly predictable, maddeningly unoriginal and disappointing effort from such a talented group.

Others
Native Tongue is about a group of people coming to grips with a tumultuous world and religion that they grew up in. And knowing that we, too, are part of this same world, we are humbly invited to join in on the chance these honest words could mirror our own need to return to our native tongue as well.

Never for Nothing
