  • Slant Magazine

It proves that Paisley is more than adept at bucking Nashville’s expectations; it’s when he adheres to them that he gets in trouble.

  • Rolling Stone

It’s sweet, a little cheesy, likely the first country ballad built around that particular notion about sexism – just the kind of sly, gently boundary-pushing song Paisley exists to write.

This time around Paisley cranks up the fun and goes all out to entertain. He succeeds on every level from the clever songwriting to his signature tasty guitar licks and personality-packed vocals.

  • Pop Matters

When he jokes at the start of the first song ("Crushin’ It") that he hasn’t had a hit song in a while ("it’s been a long time since I hit one out of the park"), it’s hard to then not hear the entirety of Moonshine in the Trunk as an attempt to do just that.

This is, for want of a better word, his wheelhouse, and while he may not be leaving his comfort zone here, Moonshine in the Trunk proves his strengths remain mighty potent.

  • Tiny Mix Tapes

Moonshine in the Trunk follows the all-American (not all Americans) formula for success: a melting pot of reproductive futurist family sentiment (the girl God made for him, the inspiring naivety of his son), whitewashing nationalism, and summer fun in the sun.

If only Paisley would not try so hard to be accepted into the "bro-country fraternity," he is still Music Row's smartest and sharpest writers around. His songs will get you laughing, thinking in fresh and intriguing ways.

Moonshine certainly isn’t a bad album by any stretch, but Paisley’s best work is freewheeling and effortless.

It’s here the singer opens his heart, showing a vulnerable color that painted so many of his previous albums. One finds less of it on ‘Moonshine in the Trunk,’ a party album that aims to make you feel good at the end of the day.

there are still some standout tracks, some meaningful and some fun, in the mix. And interesting doesn’t mean bad.

this album is pretty good and generally enjoyable. But when you put it on the same record as songs that strive for something bigger and actually stick the landing, the party feel of this album becomes a lot more hollow.

  • Renowned of sound

Despite it’s occasional lack of originality, Moonshine in the Trunk’s merit lies in it’s spurts of energetic instrumentals, which induce a curiosity about what life actually is like in the American countryside.

Overall, Moonshine in the Trunk is everything Paisley’s fans could hope for. He distributed party, love and humor throughout the album to make it flow.

However, much of "Moonshine in the Trunk" gets bogged down in cutesiness, with "Limes" showing how Paisley has never met a metaphor he didn't like. On "Country Nation," he still clumsily oversteps, the way he did last album with "Accidental Racist," making you wish he had a better sounding board.

My take: it is another fun album by Brad Paisley that will bring some great moments to his live performances. For years, Brad has been known to incorporate fun and amusing lyrics into some great country music and it’s been a great success.

Sure, the fearlessness with which he delivered Wheelhouse, without depending on radio for creative re-invention, is gone, but he does manage to stay true to his strengths as one of the format’s best storytellers.

While this album isn’t as sonically diverse as its predecessor, it is also tighter and more disciplined.

I enjoyed this album and not just for a mainstream album. The instrumentation on this album really enhances it and as I said before Brad is a hell of a guitar player.

Overall, Moonshine in the Trunk is pretty decent. It’s not a traditional country album, but it isn’t pop, or bro, or rock country either.

Musically, Paisley's arrangements continue to emphasize intricate musicianship and turn-on-a-dime ensemble play, while his lyrics use witty wordplay to explore the many ways people try to escape their problems and improve their lives.
