The individual tunes hold their own, but Monovision is a record where the whole means more than the individual numbers, since LaMontagne strikes a very specific mood -- one that's reassuring, even soothing -- and then manages to sustain it until the end.

There’s soothing, but never clichéd warmth in this retro-style. Both LaMontagne’s craftsmanship in the composition of these songs and his easygoing, unaccompanied playing will come as comfort food to established followers who should welcome this most organic return to his roots.

Monovision is like a great meal in a diner: both familiar and filling. As a songwriter, Ray LaMontagne seems to be getting even better at locating the emotional core of his music and stripping everything superfluous away. The result is an album with a visceral emotional kick to it, and a lovely way to while away the time on an overly warm summer afternoon.
