The Guardian
After two albums of flirting, hand-holding and coltish fumbling at parties, One Direction might just have finally gone all the way on their third album, Midnight Memories. Maybe.
-
The Daily Beast
It's not a great album. Then again—in the finest pop tradition—it's not really supposed to be.
-
Rolling Stone
They joyfully plunder rock riffs and hip-hop beats, but a logjam of lousy ballads suggests Bryan Adams embodies their ideal of maturity.
-
Telegraph
One Direction's new album, Midnight Memories, is cheeky, swaggeringly confident pop rock from the boys who know they're onto a winner.
-
The Idolator
The funny thing about this One Direction album, as with past One Direction albums, is that it doesn’t actually need to be this good to be a wild commercial success.
-
The Independent
The boy band's third album is a fumbling transition from pop to rock.
-
Sputnik Music
The sound of stagnation.
-
Slant Magazine
One Direction’s third album is their ’roidy bid to graduate from boy-bandom.
-
Pop Crush
They have stepped away --a bit-- from the frothy teen pop of 'Up All Night' and 'Take Me Home' in favor of songs with more instrumentation, piled with layers of richer vocal harmonies and lots of acoustic guitar.
-
The Mercury News
‘Midnight Memories’ shows a more mature sound.
-
The Verbal Thing
Call Midnight Memories what you will, but from where I’m standing, it’s an expansive pop record that showcases the voices and writing of five incredibly talented young men.
-
The National
One Direction's success should make perfect sense to anyone who has actually designed to listen to their songs. They are wonderfully well crafted.
-
All Music
Midnight Memories ends up as another satisfying album that does everything a One D album should do and then some.
-
Brent Music Reviews
Overall, it should be another fan that pleases One Direction fans.
-
Neon Tommy
“Midnight Memories” is a wonderful breath of fresh air following One Direction’s first two albums.
-
Hit the Floor Magazine
If you don’t think you like One Direction, then this album is the one that will change your mind.
-
Newsday
Transitioning from boy band to, well, band.
-
Timeout
The boys have a go at teen-rock maturity – with pretty uninspiring results.
-
The Hairpin
The music: holy smokes.
-
The Pop Break
Bottom line: Midnight Memories showcases One Direction’s feasible attempt to transition from a poppy boy band to a more indie rock group.
-
Thomas Bleach
‘Midnight Memories’ doesn’t feel like a One Direction album, it’s not as fun or cheeky however there are lot more edgier lyrics and expletives that have been blurred out.
-
Wicid
Over all, I love the album and the boys did not disappoint the fandom at all.
-
Entertainment Focus
The album straddles the cheeky teen pop they’re known for with the more sensitive and mature moments they experimented with on last album Take Me Home.
-
MIMO
Midnight Memories serves as something of a graduation.
-
On Cloud Nine
Overall, there is nothing out of place on this amazing new album.
-
House in the Sand
I'd say the album is their best one so far. It shows how their voices have been underestimated due to the rather childish pop tunes they've been singing before.
-
The Gizzle Review
The boys have had greater involvement in the songwriting for ‘Midnight Memories’ which may lead you to think they’re taking the music a little more seriously. Unfortunately, serious equals dull.
-
NY Daily News
On the pivotal new CD from One Direction, the twinkle-eyed boy band finally tries to go all the way.
