In the end, while Memphis Blues does have some fine moments, the uneven ones makes it feel like a squandered opportunity at a popular comeback.

Everyone knows this girl just wants to have fun, but Cyndi Lauper means business on her new album, "Memphis Blues," a guest-studded trip toward Beale Street.

The second star of this rating is awarded purely for Lauper’s innate charm but, in truth, this is not an especially good record.

What really makes the album fly is her quirky, scratchy voice, full of character and emotion.

I feel that this album is weak and has no real depth or power that any Lauper fan would expect.
-
Journal Star
From the trill of Charlie Musselwhite's harmonica that opens "Just Your Fool" to the gritty duet with guitarist Jonny Lang on "Crossroads" that ends the record, "Memphis Blues" hits its target with style and class.
