So why bother listening to Meet The Woo Vol. 2? Well, believe it or not, despite having a raspy ass voice and a fear of rapping over beats that aren’t on some Brooklyn drill s**t, Pop Smoke has some star qualities to him! For some odd reason, when he speaks, you hang onto his every word, even though the words that come out of his mouth aren’t anything you haven’t heard before. It’s almost like he has found a method of music-making that hypnotizes you… If you are lucky enough to evade Pop’s spellbinding ways, you will realize that Meet The Woo Vol. 2 is average at best.

Pop is a gangster no doubt, but an easy one that likes to dance and “get retarded off the xan.” His foremost priority is to chill out and party, which is a message we’re grateful for in the mess that is 2020.

Most of the tracks on the remainder of the project are brief snippets that all blend into each other, Pop Smoke almost never switching up his flow and leaning into the energy rush that his unique voice genuinely does provide on these ominous looping beats. It makes me think that there’s definitely a possibility that as Pop Smoke continues to grow his profile and probably gain access to better producers, there’s a decent chance that he could come out with a great project eventually and become a kind of 21 Savage figure. But for now, this can remain in the streets of New York.

  • Stereogum

The most arresting thing about Meet The Woo 2, like its predecessor, is the sound of the thing. Pop Smoke is now a big enough name to command collaborations from big out-of-town rappers and producers, but he still does his best work with UK beatmakers like 808Melo. His hoarse, ravaged growl fits beautifully over the groaning, ominous bass-warps, and he comes up with hooks that stick with you without pandering.

On his debut record, ‘Meet The Woo’, Pop Smoke showed a new side to himself on ‘PTSD’. On this very track, he abandoned his usual thuggish lyrics laced with illegalities and spoke about his mental health – a topic rap that’s become less taboo in rap. If you loved that track, you’ll love the range of sounds on ‘Meet the Woo 2’. On ‘She Got A Thing’, with background crooning audibly inspired by SoundCloud rapper Trippie Redd, Smoke manipulates his growling voice to sing soothing melodies.

Mere days after releasing the original 13-track version, Pop Smoke has added a trio of new songs for the tape's deluxe edition re-release. On Meet The Woo 2, Pop Smoke does not stray away from his usual drill/UK grime sound that he originally delivered on his debut single “Welcome To The Party” this past summer. Many people may have an issue with this, wanting to see some different vibes from him seeing that this is his first project since his breakout success. However, the sound works for him and there aren’t many artists out right now that are keeping this sound alive, so to see Pop Smoke still pushing that gutter hip hop sound into the new decade is an amazing thing to hear. With most of the production being handled by Axl, Yoz Beats, and 808Melo, the chemistry never seems to fade as these producers are the ones who know Pop Smoke’s vibe the best, and can bring out the best in him.

An 11 track EP, “Meet the Woo 2” is a sequel to his debut project “Meet the Woo”; A project I felt to be extremely bland, repetitive, and overall underwhelming. This project mainly consisted of Pop smoke rapping over UK Drill beats produced by 808 Melo, nothing of lyrical value, the same flow over and over, and an abundance of mentions of fashion icon Christian Dior and his clothing brand; Christian Dior and Dior are mentioned a whopping 15 times throughout 9 tracks. Pop Smoke also recycles many bars on “Meet the Woo” and directly inserts them into other tracks on the same EP without any changing of lyric. An example of this is on the song “Scenario”, which I have no doubt is just filler, Pop Smoke raps “Said I’m never lacking, always pistol packing, with them automatics, we gon send you to Heaven.” This exact same bar was used as the opening line on his song “Dior.”
