Mama Said is the second studio album by American rock musician Lenny Kravitz, released in April 1991 by Virgin Records. Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash co-wrote and played on the song "Always on the Run". He also played on the song "Fields of Joy". The song "All I Ever Wanted" was co-written by Sean Lennon. Although the album has sold enough copies to be certified double platinum, the RIAA still has it listed as platinum. In the UK, the album reached number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. In 2012, Virgin Records released an expanded, double-disc version of the album with a number of remixes and bonus tracks.-Wikipedia

The album was a stylistic evolution from his debut reflecting the changes in Kravitz’s life.

albumism
While Mama Said may not necessarily be Kravitz’s crowning moment in the studio and for record retailers, it definitely set the tone for what was to come for Kravitz down the line. One thing that’s not up for debate is that Kravitz is a student of music who takes his craft and admiration for his predecessors seriously, and this can be heard across the entirety of Mama Said.

ALL MUSIC
This time around, he synthesizes his influences better; it's essentially a seamless record, with all of its classic rock homages so carefully produced that it sounds as if it could have been released in 1972.

Blog Critics-21st Anniversary
The most common charge against Kravitz as an artist has always been that he lacks originality, merely copying the styles of other artists. When revisiting Mama Said, there’s no denying that artists such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Sly and the Family Stone, and Stevie Wonder served as models for his overall style and approach. But if Kravitz was a mere revivalist, would he still be going strong in the third decade of his career? Anyone with good instincts in the studio can approximate the late ‘60s and early ‘70s atmosphere that permeates this (and other) Kravitz albums.

The New York Times
a marketing masterpiece that offers smart music that can be interpreted as either pure pop or a cool inside joke.

Record Collector Magazine - 21st Anniversary
One can only hope that Kravitz himself has been listening intently to these songs during the compilation of the deluxe edition, and that this might just relight the spark of a career that’s since spiralled downwards to diminishing returns.

MOOSE RADIO
Thanks to Kravitz, the future of music's past had never looked so bright.
