Magical Mystery Tour.

Magical Mystery Tour is a record by the English rock band the Beatles that was released as a double EP in the United Kingdom and an LP in the United States. It includes the soundtrack to the 1967 television film of the same name. The EP was issued in the UK on 8 December 1967 on the Parlophone label, while the Capitol Records LP release in the US and Canada occurred on 27 November and featured an additional five songs that were originally released as singles that year. In 1976, Parlophone released the eleven-track LP in the UK. -Wikipedia

The movie was a flop, but the album was full of historic singles and inspired experiments.

Hearing the boys shout “she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah” over their loopy musical chaos gets one a little teary eyed when thinking about the sheer scope of their career; from four mopheaded lads who crafted straightforward rock n roll riffs to four long haired, complicated men who composed some of the greatest, elaborate, and profound music ever created. And the remastered version is no joke: get this thing now and listen to how fun aging can be.

If for no other reason than for the fact that this CD contains their greatest psychedelic experiment along with the ultimate double sided single, this should appear near the top of that list.

As essential a purchase as any other Beatles album, and some of my absolutely favourite songs ever created by any band.

“All You Need Is Love” is the perfect ending to this weird and wonderful album, the creative peak of a band who touched the hearts and minds of millions all over the world. Much to the sorrow of nonpartisan admirers of the band, it’s pretty much downhill from Magical Mystery Tour, as the Beatles make a spiritual journey to India, divide into warring factions and enter a lengthy period of willful self-destruction.

If The Beatles do have an under-appreciated album release, then Magical Mystery Tour is surely it. It’s one of those albums that allows the listener to dip in and out as they choose, and as such, is an oddly effortless listen. It’s one of the most generous albums in my collection.

Magical Mystery Tour is the first Beatles album where the differences between mono and stereo are fairly minor. The next album – the ‘White album’ – would see the greatest differences yet, before their last two albums dropped mono altogether. Of the mono releases, this is the only one where I’d say the stereo release has the slight edge over the mono (for Your Mother Should Know not sounding appaling) but I don’t know the stereo Baby You’re A Rich Man well enough to know if that tips the balance back. But mono or stereo, this is some of the best music ever recorded.
