Magic Potion

Magic Potion is the fourth studio album by American rock duo the Black Keys. It was released in 2006 and was their first record released on Nonesuch Records, the band's current label. This album marks the first time they wrote and composed entirely original material, unlike on previous albums and EPs.- Wikipedia

The pleasures are coyer and the variations much more subtle from riff to riff, song to song. In other words, it's not the record I want to hear from the Black Keys.

One of 2006’s most potent releases, will leave you throttled and thrilled—and you might need to replace your smoldering speakers.

Loyal fans, though, will find much of their favoured brand in abundance here.

There’s little here that’s any different to the three preceding albums, and nothing likely to build on Girl Is On My Mind’s crossover success.

Almost everything that was good about the Black Keys is stripped away, and left as a skeleton of their former selves.

If the Black Keys sped up a little, their stodginess might feel more songful. But part of their charm is that they don’t.

Black Keys don't rock the boat much with their style, just continuing to hone it and make it all come together.

They've played this sort of music before. Then again, they've rarely played it better.

It's been a long time since the majors put out a record this savage. This is the door to the blues in 2006; hold on to your hips because they will begin to twitch.

Guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach is possessed of a compelling, hurt-beyond-his-years voice and an approach to lead guitar that is both wildly expressive and utterly succinct.

It's all sweat, sincerity and as much swagger as Carney's basement allows.

Perhaps magic potion is not coke or a fancy label or staying pure but rather what happens after a well-deserved rest.

  • Slacker

Magic Potion is gritty, raw, immediate and sludgy.

Magic Potion is not only the best blues album of the year, it may be the best rock album too.

However, there is nothing high-concept or ironically distanced about their style; it's all sweat, sincerity and as much swagger as Carney's basement allows.

  • Obscure Sound

While The Black Keys have a retro Blues rock sound, they usher in some great material for immature young ears and nostalgia for the older one.

The Black Keys exist on the cutting edge of sparse, a distortion-laden throwback whose sound even predates the grunge revolution.
