Critic Reviews
Show All-
Rolling Stone
Madman is a difficult, sometimes impossibly dense record. America is worthy of a better story than this record and Elton John needs a better story than this to sing.
-
Classic Rock Review
Side two of the album is far less memorable than the first and many of the songs feature backing musicians more prominently than John himself.
-
All Music
Madman Across the Water begins to fall apart toward the end, but the record remains an ambitious and rewarding work, and John never attained its darkly introspective atmosphere again. 4.5/5.
-
Millheiser
Madman Across The Water represents the “classic” Elton John in his nascent form. Here he was in full bloom, collaborating with Bernie Taupin alongside the genesis of his most famous band line-up.
-
Sputnik Music
Madman will vary from person to person (as you can see, this reviewer was particularly put off by it), but regardless, most Elton fans would still agree that the best albums of his are still on the horizon, just a little bit closer now than before. 3.5/5.
-
Sputnik Music
An underlooked record in Elton's classic years! 5/5.
-
Subjective Sounds
Madman Across The Water is an unequivocally exceptional album from start to finish.
-
Daily Vault
While it may not be a top-40 hit for John, it may be one of his most powerful moments of his career.
-
U Discover Music
Described by Elton John himself as “the very last album of its kind we’ll do”, ‘Madman Across The Water’ continued his North American domination.
-
Uncut
Combine[s] authenticity and fantasy. 7/10.
-
Vinyl Reviews
It is a vast improvement over the flawed sonics of the original U.K. pressing.
-
Keno
As a keyboard player, I find the piano on this album more complex than most Elton John albums of this period and the musicianship as a whole more inspiring.
-
A Z Central
Well loved.
-
People
The songs show how impressive John can be when he isn’t singing himself into the netherworld.
-
Music Musings and Such
The overall quality of the record is very high.
