Show All-
Rolling Stone
1972 - “Highway Star” is a great opening track ... “Space Truckin'” is just as good ... In between those two Deep Purple classics lies nothing but good, hard, socking music, although some of the lyrics may leave a bit to be desired.

All Music
Machine Head contains the "mother of all guitar riffs" -- and one of the first learned by every beginning guitarist -- in "Smoke on the Water."
-
Only Solitaire
this is back-to-the-wall, all-time-heavy-and-glorious, gritty-and-ferocious rock and roll. That says it all, basically.
-
Louder Sound
The band had hit on a unique, loose-limbed formula and were determinedly carving their own niche. Machine Head is a pivotal album because it set the template for Purple’s entire future direction.

John McFerrin Music Reviews
And there, once again, is a great slab of rock'n'roll done as heavy metal.

Wilson & Alroys Record Reviews
Far better than Fireball, but still no great shakes.

Ultimate Classic Rock
Machine Head' is Deep Purple’s most essential and influential album, hands down, what with timeless classics like the unbeatable show opener “Highway Star,” maybe the band’s best ever pure single in “Never Before,” the irrepressible “Space Truckin’,” and the mother of all riffs in “Smoke on the Water.”

Classic Rock Review
Musically, the album seems to strike the perfect balance between accessible hard rock and instrumental jams. Just about every track contains multiple leads showcasing the musical talents of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and keyboard virtuoso Jon Lord, while remaining relatively short. upbeat, and melodic. This proved to be a potent formula for 1972 hard rock.

Record Collector Magazine
Ultimately, though, Machine Head cemented its reputation decades ago, courtesy of seven vital songs played in under 40 minutes that made for the definitive portrait of a rock powerhouse.

Infrared Magazine
2018 - The decision was made to ensure top-notch, quality rock only, so the band put their nose to the grindstone to come up with something undeniably remarkable.
-
Metal Assault
2012 - the kind of album that transcends everything, and its unadulterated music will always find appreciation among listeners. In my opinion, it is the most essential hard rock album of all time.

It’s because Machine Head is a great album.

Back Seat Mafia
2015 - If it’s one thing that Machine Head has over Deep Purple in Rock, it’s the fact it has an absolutely killer closing track, sealing once and for all Deep Purple’s reputation as one of the iconic rock bands of the early 70s.
