Love Symbol

Love Symbol is the fourteenth studio album by American recording artist Prince, and the second of two that featured his backing band the New Power Generation. It was released on October 13, 1992 by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. It was originally conceived as a "fantasy rock soap opera" with various spoken segues throughout, and contains elements of R&B, pop, soul, funk, and rock styles. While some of the seques were cut for time, the original storyline became the basis of Prince's direct-to-video film 3 Chains o' Gold. -Wikipedia

As a collection of songs, the Love Symbol album isn’t as cohesive and focused as its predecessor, but it is more musically adventurous.

Overtly metaphysical in its self-reflection and spiritual awakenings, Love Symbol has cemented itself as a pivotal album in Prince’s career.

The story of Love Symbol allowed him to play out all of his ideal roles, even if they occasionally came into opposition: avenger, trickster, peacemaker, lover, aesthete.

It feels like a masterclass in funk, it leaves New Jack trembling in its wake and Funkadelic (not to mention whoever James Brown was working with) looking behind their shoulders.

His name is Prince. And he is funky. So he tells us on the album whose official title is the unpronounceable symbol he will later adopt instead of Prince.
