Soul Tracks
the seismic shift that John makes on his fourth studio CD, Love In The Future, is both unorthodox and anticipated: instead of just the expected sprawling piano-anchored ballads, hip-hop-recalling R&B jams and occasional flirtations with pop and his gospel church choir director roots, he stretches stylistically into techno, electronica and even hints of jazz and trip-hop. If you thought that 2008's Evolver was brash, take some Dramamine before pressing 'play' because Legend's latest is an even wilder ride.

Slant Magazine
Though Love in the Future purportedly has its ear on the future, Legend frequently draws on his past.

You Know I Got Soul
Is Love In The Future a failure? Certainly not. But it’s a bit bloated and some of the tracks, in typical Legend fashion, start to meander. Die-hard Legend fans probably don’t mind, though.
-
All Music
Love in the Future is among Legend's best work, made for couples who are into one another for the long term while feeling a little daring and crazy.
-
Soulhead
Love in the Future is a great R&B album, one that looks at a relationship from all angles, examining the good and the bad, the highs and the lows. Given the exceptional quality of this album, and the upcoming nuptials to Ms. Teigen, one thing is certain—the future definitely holds great things for Legend.

PopMatters
One could even make a very strong case for Love in the Future being Legend's best album to date.

Exclaim!
today's Legend is content to adopt a croonerific sound that doesn't challenge existing soul genre parameters in the least. That's fine, in theory, but rather yawn-worthy in execution.

The Irish Times
From All of Me to the cinematic, neatly embellished sonic whirl of Made to Love, Legend’s love letter blurs no lines with its unashamedly old-fashioned romantic pitch and poise.
-
The Musical Hype
R&B singer-songwriter John Legend makes genuine love sound both respectable and desirable on his fourth solo album, ‘Love in the Future.’
-
Under the Gun Review
Love in the Future is a deep breath in John Legend’s collection, and it shouldn’t be treated as anything but.
-
Peeridium
This album is worth checking out for all R&B fans and is a great starting point for those who have never listened to Mr. Legend or are just looking for something new to add to their musical library.

The Drop
The songs on ‘Love in the Future’ are collectively about the promise of embarking on a new marriage. There are musings on the possibilities of children, endless sex, emotional salvation and cures for loneliness. We find the singer-songwriter trying different sounds that fit his voice. There aren’t any missteps like the one’s in ‘Evolver.’ This time around, his inconsistencies form when he goes back to old habits, like the schmaltzy ‘All of Me.’

Stash Everything
Fortunately, Love In The Future does make a nice comeback for Legend as a solo singer/songwriter. The contemporary soul album is mainly filled with positive tunes that are most suitable for passionate couples and die-hard romantics who will definitely appreciate the heavily themed love tracks.
