Love For Sale

Love for Sale is the second and final collaborative album by American singers Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, released on September 30, 2021, by Columbia and Interscope Records. It is the sixty-first (final) studio album of Bennett's career, and Gaga's seventh. Following Cheek to Cheek (2014), the duo's first collaborative album, Love for Sale was recorded between 2018 and early 2020, consisting of their renditions of various jazz standards by American composer Cole Porter, to whom the record is a tribute. -Wikipedia

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett proved that jazz music can be revived and radiate a lighter and glowier sound. Love for Sale has its moments where some songs lack the luster of Cheek to Cheek but overall reminds jazz listeners of its vibrancy and instrumentation. This doesn’t take away from the value of the album; there are just songs that get repetitive or go on too long. The growth of the duo is evident throughout every track, but it may not be as noteworthy as its predecessor.

Gaga assists Bennett in leaving behind a beautiful legacy in the music industry with their final project together. Not only does this recognize Porter for his contributions, but it also does the same for Bennett. The amount of vulnerability from the 95-year-old jazz/show tunes singer, along with the euphoric vocals from Gaga, marks Love for Sale as the most blissful way to say farewell.

Paying homage to the legacy of Cole Porter, “Love for Sale” is not only a masterpiece but also a testament to the power of a genre that many perceive as dying. Through their historic collaboration, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett show the world that jazz is still sexy.

One of the finest jazz releases in a long while, Love for Sale is a must for fans of the genre, as well as its two incomparable performers. One only regrets that the duo had not received an opportunity to tackle Hoagy Carmichael in the same manner.

It’s not exactly revelatory, and some listeners might find the aesthetic too anachronistic and corny, but this album is a wonderful celebration of Porter’s genius, Bennett’s legendary career, the importance of smooth jazz and Lady Gaga’s desire to keep its fire burning. Conjuring memories of a more simple time before cynicism and information overload took hold, sometimes a little blissful regression is good for the soul.

Ultimately, swing albums aren’t in short supply right now – since the turn of the Millennium, it’s almost become a pop stable all over again, a cocktail-fuelled lounge experience. ‘Love For Sale’ exceeds this, though, propelled by the vivacity of its performances, and the easy-going charm with which it is accomplished. Existing in a different realm to ‘Chromatica’, it’s testament to Lady Gaga’s astonishing breadth, and the timeless effervescence of Tony Bennett.

Bennett’s got these songs under his skin, and pop’s Mother Monster does a brilliant job of helping him deliver them as a final gift to the world.

Both Tony Bennett and Gaga will easily go down as some of the most influential performers in American entertainment history, each deservingly so. If this is really Bennett’s final work, it’s definitely worth a listen. Besides, they really are the top.

This isn't a record where the songs and arrangements are at the forefront, it's an album that's all about the show and spectacle. Its pleasures are slightly fleeting but they're pleasures all the same.

The credulity-defying achievement of still having a voice that can pitch and hold notes at that age is the ultimate proof of what a technically expert singer he’s always been.

Even if you aren’t a big fan of jazz, this collaborative effort by two well-established artist is an undeniable masterpiece. It is a beautiful tribute to the American composer and songwriter Cole Porter, who was a huge player in the development of the jazz genre since he began creating music in the early 1920s. Even after Porter’s death in 1964, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett keep his music alive with “Love for Sale.”

The good thing about the new album Love for Sale (Streamline) is that it has a unifying theme. All ten tracks on the album – there are 12 on the “de luxe version” – are by Cole Porter. True, Bennett recorded less Cole Porter than Sinatra, but he is such an appealing character, and he can give such wonderful empathy to a lyric, that is perhaps the main joy here.

It’s a superb final entry into Bennett’s catalogue, and we can only hope that despite his retiring from the spotlight, records like this one (along with his effortlessly enduring cool) will continue to inspire younger musicians to explore the fascinating world of jazz and swing.

As Bennett's final farewell to the world of music, this album successfully achieved its purpose, but it would have been more appealing if there were a little more variety between the jazz pieces that were selected.
