There is a hearty brand of male competitiveness here, on “Love, Damini,” that never bleats or chest-beats itself into maddening braggadocio. Everything on Burna Boy’s new album is never too hot or too cold. It’s just right.

Contributions from South African vocal legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo bookend the record while in between, Burna hosts global titans including Jamaican deejay Popcaan, English singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran, and Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin. Despite its panoply of styles and personnel, the album remains consistently interesting while still adhering to the Afro-fusion vibe that is his hallmark.

Love. Damini is sure to be Burna’s biggest album yet, but it’s not without its inconsistencies. Although the record is bogged down by tiresome crossover attempts and its fairly lengthy runtime, Burna’s inimitable charisma and innate ability to craft earworm melodies ultimately makes the album another triumph.
