Lotus

Lotus is the seventh studio album by American singer Christina Aguilera. RCA Records released the album on November 9, 2012. Its music incorporates pop styles with elements of dance-pop, rock in the form of upbeat songs and piano-driven ballads. Aguilera described the album as a "rebirth", drawing inspiration from events in her life, her appearance on The Voice, and her divorce. The album was recorded at Aguilera's home studio. As executive producer, she collaborated with a wide range of producers, including new partners Alex da Kid, Max Martin, Lucas Secon and Tracklacers.- Wikipedia

  • Slant

By virtue of the fact that Lotus is Aguilera’s shortest album since her debut, it boasts less filler but also fewer obvious standouts

Tenacity and rebirth are themes telegraphed hard on Lotus.

It’s just one telling moment where this vitriol-tsunami of a record misses a chance to connect Aguilera’s music with her warm, empathetic TV presence.

If you’re a fan of technically proficient power vocals, you’re likely a fan of her singing — if not always her work.

So ‘Lotus’ jumps from one style (ooh, look … a club banger!) to another (clear the floor, Christina’s about ready to bust out a ballad!), trying on more than a half-dozen different producers.

The Pop music landscape has changed so much and it may take a lot of catching up for her to hang in there with the reigning pop-stars of this generation. I wonder if she might just be crowded out of her position?

Such a notion extends beyond the power of her now rusty instrument to reflect a diva passed her prime and desperately trying to prove a point.

You may agree that this album is her new attempt to regain or re-establish her status as among the best pop stars around. Overall, it is worth listening to.

Aguilera deserves credit for indulging far fewer showy melismas this time. She may continue to oversing, but at least she's doing so with more focus.

While it's not entirely accurate to call Aguilera's latest a bomb, one can't escape the fact that it wasn't a triumphant comeback album either.

If there is any victory to be claimed for Aguilera here, it is that at least she bludgeons the listener into submission with actual songs rather than the thinly veiled excuses of some of her peers.

It's hard to blame her for playing it safe, particularly because she wound up with such a strong pop album, one that reconfirms her gifts as a singer and saviness as a pop star.
