Show All-
Pitchfork
Usher's new album finds the R&B star holding his own with guests and producers including A$AP Rocky, Diplo, Noah "40" Shebib, Rick Ross, and more.
-
Consequence of Sound
he’s never needed a career rejuvenation, but in his new album, he’s reinventing himself anyway
-
The Guardian
Looking 4 Myself is bloated and self-conscious, but when it hits the spot it's a feast of detailed, brilliantly gleaming R&B.
-
Sputnik Music
Usher stumbles into his best record since Confessions
-
Vogue
Looking 4 Myself has gems throughout, such as “Dive,” “What Happened to U,” and especially “Climax.” “Climax” finds Usher at his best, a seamless blend of soundscapes he’s come to conquer (R&B and pop), and his vocals are immaculate.
-
Soul in Stereo
the album’s creativity makes it a breath of fresh air in Usher’s discography
-
Complex
Looking 4 Myself ensures that he won’t be disappearing any time soon.
-
Pop Matters
But this record... well, this is another thing entirely. Looking 4 Myself is ambitious without being hifalutin, gritty without wallowing, and emotional without lapsing into pathos.
-
LA Times Blog
key music that draws on a world of styles permeating pop culture in 2012, including electronic dance music, progressive R&B, dubstep, pop and hip-hop, to create an interesting hybrid pop
-
Trini Trent
- a worthy addition to his extensive catalogue of material
-
Pop Dust
- it has lived up to its considerable pre-release hype—being indie and weird is a surprisingly good look for Usher
-
AV Music
- a sense of freedom and exploration carries through Looking 4 Myself that makes it feel unique from any other Usher album
-
Chicago Tribune
"Looking 4 Myself" tries out a lot of different ideas ... and it's a credit to Usher's pop star pedigree that he mostly makes them work.
-
BBC
Trim its fat and this album showcases a new and exciting sound for Usher.
-
All Music
There's no shame in riding the wave, especially when you can do it better than anyone else. Calling it revolutionary is disingenuous.
-
Spin
it’s about how many platforms you can occupy simultaneously as much as it is about how many tears you’ve shed
-
Rolling Out
he’s given his fans a reason to smile
-
Entertainment Weekly
still sounds like the Usher you know; it's just a little more interesting than his usual onslaught of skull-pounding beats and silk-sheets ballads
-
Pop Crush
a well-rounded collection and shows major growth for the 33-year-old crooner
-
Slant Magazine
Maybe someday Usher will craft an album fresh from an investigative visit to Burning Man. Until then, the unavoidably uneven but fresh Looking 4 Myself will have to do.
-
Drowned in Sound
Strip away four or so tracks of pure fat and what’s left of Looking 4 Myself is a trim and proper album.
-
Beats per Minute
If some of the fat had been trimmed, and the forgettable songs been taken out, then Usher would have had a masterpiece of an album.
-
Soul in Stereo
If Usher spent more time innovating and less time imitating, Looking 4 Myself might have been a classic. Still, even though you’d heard similar songs before I bet they didn’t sound this good.
-
People
Then he’s the old-school soul man on the funky James Brown-ish “Twisted” and “Sins of My Father,” which, produced by Amy Winehouse collaborator Salaam Remi, inspires Usher to look for the Marvin Gaye inside of him.
-
Compulsive Reader
Intense, with short phrases more spoken than sung, featuring shimmering sheets of sound
-
Now Futures
But refreshingly, it's more about sound quality and songwriting than the calculated brand-building of his recent releases.
-
Spectrum Pulse
Usher has probably produced one of the best albums that's universally about sex in a long time
-
Washington Examiner
Still, overall, "Looking" is a hit
-
Something You Said
Usher translates his feelings through these slow jams, and successfully depicts his equally amazing body, um oops… I meant personality
-
Newsday
"Looking 4 Myself" may not match the four No. 1 singles that flew off "Confessions" in 2004-2005, but it's actually his best album yet.
-
I'm Just Saying
I believe that the downfall of this album is that Usher’s trying too hard to be everything to everyone – and in doing so, the momentum of the album never builds and as a whole body of work – isn’t cohesive.
-
Music Perk
The album kick starts well, gets a little out of place in between but ends brilliantly.
-
RWD
this is an Usher album worth keeping
-
The YY Scene
This release is the best pop record to hit shelves since Justin Timberlake’s Justified which was itself the best release of its kind since Michael Jackson’s Thriller .
-
Screen Invasion
This album is similar, but the approach seems more honest and more believable as Usher really seems to be moving on. Regardless, his fans will always be moving on with him.
-
The Indian Express
But for someone who has titled his album Looking 4 Myself,Usher seems to have it all figured out.
-
Classic Rock 92.1
Based on his latest album, Usher should keep looking, because he’s proving himself as worth finding.
-
Lifestyles Defined
Usher’s Looking 4 Myself album is typical in the best possible way, and it was what we have come to know and love about him.
