Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
The Compton rapper’s second album occasionally showcases the magic he can make, but the music is largely static, a rollercoaster operating on a straight track.
-
Rolling Stone
The rapper’s sophomore album is a fun, if slightly surface-level, listen.

All of this growth, of course, bears with it the risk of throwing off fans who perhaps expected more epic production in the vein of “The Box” or Antisocial closer “War Baby,” or lyrics that reflected the itchy, paranoid vibe of the prior album. Instead, they’ll hear Roddy’s thoughts on growing in a relationship, becoming a father, and experiencing real wealth without the penitentiary chances that defined his early output. To those fans, I’d say: Give Roddy’s latest a chance, and it might change your mind as much as its process has apparently changed Roddy.

Clash Magazine
Roddy Ricch is not bold enough to actually commit to these musical ventures, just like he’s not bold enough to commit to saying his name on record. On his sophomore album, he’s writing checks that his end product sadly cannot cash.

Hot New HipHop
Roddy Ricch successfully subverts expectations with an extremely low-key record that requires numerous listens to soak up all of the incredible production, experimental tracks, and unique wordplay lurking beneath LIVE LIFE FAST’s surface. Some fans will still be quick to write off his sophomore album as a dud that’s not as “exciting” as its predecessor, but it’s easy to look at Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial through rose-tinted lenses due to the success of “The Box” and all of the accomplishments that it brought the Compton-bred artist. In reality, even that album was one that had to grow on listeners, so fans should heed Roddy Ricch’s advice and take their time when listening to his sobering sophomore album.

NME
Because ‘Live Life Fast’ finds Roddy Ricch on a creative upswing; his unprecedented composure in the face of gargantuan success is impressive.

Most of LIVE THE LIFE FAST is played with this kind of energy: forced, obvious, his best ideas obscured in a haze of complacency.
