Musicianship is excellent, with particular praise for the guitar playing of Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins sublime drumming leading the aural assault.Unfortunately iconic front man Perry Farrell comes across as primarily disinterested and half hearted throughout the performance. His enthusiasm levels only appears to generate a response during an extended largely instrumental stunning rendition of the anthem “Three Days”His lackadaisical attitude and talking down to the audience as a “rock star”is also particularly galling to view.

Recorded at Terminal 5 in New York in July 2011, Live In NYC marked the release of Jane’s Addiction’s most recent studio album The Great Escape Artist. As with most live albums you are left with a ‘you had to be there’ feeling but as far as aural representations of live shows go this is a dynamic, visceral and sonically engaging recording.

Live in NYC is another concert document capturing the band in their always visceral live show, this time performing a N.Y.C. gig in support of The Great Escape Artist in July of 2011. Not surprisingly, the set list is packed mostly with material from their first three albums, with the band playing roughly half the songs from 1990's Ritual de lo Habitual, several tunes from Nothing's Shocking, and opening the show with an unexpected rendition of "Whores" from their self-titled 1987 album.

This is an excellent performance with great audio quality. Perry is awesome as always as well as Dave (shirtless as always too) and Steve. All around good performance with some hot women in the background.

This latest release, Live in NYC, documents the band’s 2011 show at the inauspiciously small Terminal 5 venue on the still-ongoing Theatre of the Escapists Tour. This gig, in partnership with LG, (an incidental factoid you won’t soon forget as the camera pans over the awnings largely displaying the company’s logo every few minutes) was originally billed as the world’s first user generated 3D concert film, a concept I still don’t get.

With Live in NYC MC Perry Farrell stokes the embers of the Jane's Addiction rock n' roll circus with a healthy dose of post-modern Borscht Belt shtick. The set list is the standard one which thankfully, for context, includes a couple of numbers from the two latter day records and opens with a number from their indie debut album.

This 12-song concert, filmed at Terminal 5 in New York, NY in July 2011, begins with two girls dressed in black latex swinging from the ceiling. By the fourth song, ‘Ted, Just Admit It…’ guitarist Dave Navarro is shirtless; meanwhile always understated bassist Chris Chaney drives this spectacle with ease. 12 brilliant tunes spanning 79 highly enjoyable minutes, Live In NYC displays a great light show that transcends the entire venue; and it features the first ever on-stage performance of ‘Irresistible Force (Met The Immovable Object)’, from The Great Escape Artist.

  • Louder Sound

Perry Farrell’s inter-song banter plays semi-scripted, Dave Navarro’s solo runs are in danger of leaving the songs behind altogether at times, all hampered by a jarring, roughly mixed production punctuated with over-loud and oddly timed effects. Not all hope is gone – the inherent brilliance of Up The Beach and Mountain Song is immune to any water treading – and there’s a nagging feeling old glories could be recaptured with a mild application of will.

Other tracks include Just Because, Up The Beach, Mountain Song and Whores. The album also includes the debut live performance of Irresistible Force (Met The Immovable Object), the latest single from The Great Escape Artist.

Three songs into this document of a 2011 tour stop in New York City in support of Jane's Addiction's 'The Great Escape Artist,' frontman Perry Farrell introduces the newer song, "Just Because," by saying to the crowd, "They ask me why do I do it? Is it for the money? I say to 'em, 'Just because.'" It's hard not to believe him. During the preceding two decades, the band had gone through a handful of reunions and temporary reincarnations, but the older, wiser Jane's Addiction chronicled on 'Live in NYC' sound like they continue reconvening out of a legitimate love-hate-love relationship with each other and an unfettered love for their fans. The vast majority of the material on the live album come from the first two Jane's Addiction studio albums including about half of 1990's 'Ritual de lo Habitual.' Still, this is clearly latter-day Jane's Addiction: Farrell often sounds raspy and out-of-breath, not quite reaching the otherworldly octaves he used to as the other members occasionally seem to be going through the motions. But 'Live in NYC' still manages to capture all the magic, majesty and mayhem that make up a typically atypical Jane's Addiction concert complete with a dizzying rendition of the epic "Three Days." It's a solid live album, but throughout the closer, "Jane Says," the mix is littered with the sound of confetti and balloons being launched upon the crowd, leading to a feeling that, to get the full effect, maybe you had to be there.

The show was amazing. All members were on point. They preformed "Nothing Shocking" in its entirety and did it WELL! I felt like I was fourteen again. They also did live suspensions on stage. Two gorgeous women hanging two stories above the stage only by the hooks imbedded in their flrsh. AWESOME! Not shocking, just perfect.

Jane's Addiction was one of the first bands to emerge from the early 1990s alternative rock movement to gain mainstream media attention and commercial success in the United States. Their initial farewell tour launched the first Lollapalooza festival, an alternative rock showcase. As a result, Jane's Addiction became icons of what Farrell dubbed the "Alternative Nation." The band was ranked 35th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list. The band is known for influencing many bands of the alternative metal scene of the 90's.

And that’s exactly what Live in NYC is — a kick ass album. Ever since my first Jane’s show, back when my money to hair ratio was exactly the opposite of today’s figures, I’ve been trying to convince non-believers that the band’s studio albums don’t capture the Jane’s vibe. The band itself is a tight unit both on stage and in the studio, so the magic can’t be attributed to Dave Navarro’s live guitar virtuosity. It doesn’t matter where that guy plays, he always shreds.

After starting the show with Whores, they teased the audience with a little Led Zeppelin. A band that Farrell identified as the band they dreamed of being like. Navarro played “Hangman” and Perry followed along. The audience cheered for more and they obliged for a few more bars. This was the tone of the show. A fun, carefree night of music. Low key and for the fans.

At live shows, Jane's Addiction unites disparate subcultures as successfully as it melds musical influences. Its audience is a bizarre coalition of metal fans, punks, college-radio hipsters, goths, nouveau hippies and the unaligned and curious. What attracts such a motley array of fans is that the band has managed to bring back a sense of rock-and-roll as an underground. There's a strong element of ritual and ceremony to Jane's Addiction performances, heightened by the group's stage backdrops.
