Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
The Texas rapper’s latest album sounds so damn good that the emptiness of it all is an afterthought.
-
HipHop DX
‘LIFE OF A DON’ SOUNDS GORGEOUS BUT ALSO LIKE LAZY AFTER-PARTY VIBES.
-
The Post
Don Toliver is one of the most celebrated and exciting up-and-comers in modern hip-hop, but on Life of a Don, his lack of care for lyrical depth or melodic variety outshine his clear talent.
-
NME
After a near-perfect debut, this follow-up finds the Travis Scott protégé incorporating more commercial sounds. When it works, it really works.

What You Expect?
Whether it be relationship ups and downs, vices, and spontaneous adventures with Travis Scott; Don Toliver is living the type of life fitting for someone named Don. This project should be in album of the year contention. Np gimmicks needed, just great music. Don Toliver makes the city look good.

The Lantern
Don Toliver solidifies his sound on 'Life Of A Don'.

The Daily Howl
Overall Toliver did not disappoint whatsoever The album, his voice, the production made the album great. The album has songs that deserve to be put in people’s playlists.
-
The La Salle Falconer
The album serves as an anecdote to the stress and anxiety of the pandemic, and everything else that transpired in these past eighteen months. The album provides a feel-good moment, with a touch of realism, leaving the listener with a chance to experience what it might be like to live the “Life of A DON.”

Clash Magazine
A record that refuses to divulge its secrets immediately, ‘Life Of A Don’ is packed with immaculate sonic detail while also relishing a certain directness. Of all the artists in the Cactus Jack stable, Don Toliver is the one who could blow much further than others – an example of natural talent given the landscape to grow, ‘Life Of A Don’ is one of Stateside rap’s most electrifying statements in 2021.

Ratings Game Music
Don Toliver is everything I want PARTYNEXTDOOR to be. I feel like he has a great gauge of what we expect to hear from him and seems to care less what the rest of the music world is doing. It’s just so refreshing to hear someone who is comfortable in his own skin make music.

'Life of a DON' Is the Perfect Balance Between Psychedelic R&B and Moshpit Music.
-
Fantastic Hip Hop
Even with its lack of buildup and climax, Don Toliver’s sophomore effort is fun but nowhere near as ambitious as a record from one of the most prominent upcoming names in hip hop should be.
-
BasketRap
There are enough great moments and songs to make this album memorable. The production is very appealing to me and Don’s vocals for the most part are stellar. My main problem is that it feels like a few tracks are meant to be filler and provide nothing to the quality of the album. Don Toliver has endless talent and potential, but I think he could’ve spiced up the lackluster and forgettable tracks.

Life of a DON is a project that serves as a blissful reminder of the warmer days just gone.
-
Gen B Magazine
‘Life of a DON’ is an album you can play from front to back and enjoy yourself. Things aren’t too deep, which is okay as Don creatives an aura you can’t help but vibe to. The production is terrific and fits what Don is trying to do perfectly. Travis Scott does a great job as a featured artist on the project, and Don shows how to effectively manipulate your voice like an instrument to create incredible-sounding songs.
-
Hardwood and Hollywood
I felt that on some tracks, Toliver took it to the next level with his vocals, and made some tracks that I will come back to for a long time. The production was also really strong for a majority of the album, and the majority of the features performed well.
-
The Rice Thresher
“Life of a DON” is a strong sophomore effort that builds on Toliver’s first album and past features to create a varied and multi-faceted album. With songs that range from calmer, more downbeat tracks to more energetic autotuned rap, the album is still a unified effort that exemplifies Don Toliver’s sound.

Meaww
Sophomore album is 'super underwhelming'.

The Needle Drop
Don spends most of the album warming up.

The Quinnipac Chronicle
Don Toliver’s ‘Life of a Don’ falls flat despite stellar production.
