Eli Young Band made their major-label debut with Jet Black & Jealous, an album that stretched the definition of contemporary country music to include pop melodies and rock & roll guitars. The band does the same on this follow-up release, but the new tracks don’t pack the same punch as “Radio” and “Throw and Go,” . . . . Life at Best isn’t a bad album; it’s just a step backwards.

“Life At Best” won’t revolutionize the genre, but it is a consistently enjoyable and occasionally exceptional album from a skilled band that has worked hard to earn its success.

  • The Bside Review

The 14 tracks blend into seemingly one big track that's very similarly paced and pitched. I know the strain on country music is to now appeal to the pop crowd, but I don't see any of the songs on here making top rotation in pop stations. It's not anything to write home about lyrically either - which kind of just makes for a long, drawn out hybrid album.

On Life At Best, EYB demonstrates that their growth and dedication is paying off with an introspective album that never loses its edge.

There are 14 tracks on 'Life at Best, ' which may be about three too many. Eli's voice is unique and he does well to work within his abilities, but it's not dynamic enough to continue surprising listeners after 35 or 40 minutes. The album drags on like a good movie that needs to shave off a few scenes to be a great movie.

Clearly, Nashville and producers Frank Liddell (who exec produces here) and Mike Wrucke (who’s behind the board) have been good to these four University of North Texas buds, whose new album is their best, and most reflective yet.

Life at Best is an engaging blend of rough-and-tumble alt-country, with bits of jangle pop and heartland rock thrown in.

EYB's sophomore release - this time on Republic Nashville - is an energy-packed 14-song disc with good songwriting and very little filler.

. . . I got to listen to the new CD … and all I have to say is that was ‘music at best.’

There’s a distinct variance from track to track as EYB veers from energetic quasi-rockers to steel-ladled country songs to conflicted ballads. And yet the album maintains a singular identity, built around a sound that’s been masterfully created over the course of three studio albums.

If you’re expecting something more than from their previous records, you’re only going to become disappointed by its stale attributes.

The new album brings familiar EYB sounds to the table blending rock laced guitar riffs, honest lyrics and soaring vocals served up with Eli's signature edge.

Life At Best avoids sonic frills or faddish concessions — this is honest American heartland music, rooted in reality while refusing to surrender to despair.

The album itself from start to finish is a solid collection of the EYB sound that fans know and love, to new and different co-writes that press the boundaries of familiarity.
