The real “concept” here is: Michael Jackson tribute album. And a damn good one.

If he continues in this vein, he may accrue enough psychological chinks in the armor to truly follow in MJ’s paranoid footsteps. At the moment, though, it feels like a remarkably groovy one-off.

The gentleman turns heartbreaker on his fourth album.

With that said, Libra Scale shows artistic growth and commitment to evolution. Still, Libra Scale lacks the sparkle found in Ne-Yo’s previous work.

The album succeeds by not bogging itself down in the details of the story, and instead plays out as a well-focused soundtrack as though the story were a film.

Ne-Yo's Michael Jacksonish inflections are enjoyable as ever, too.

And that’s the problem. The album is a bit too safe.

And with Libra Scale, Ne-Yo proves yet again that being at the top is exactly where he belongs.

But while these songs mostly aren’t as immediate as Ne-Yo’s first three albums, they end up sinking in nevertheless.

He’s a stylish fella, young Ne-Yo: every track oozes class (if not always excitement) and there are times when you’re not sure if that Ne-Yo’s or in fact his idol MJ’s falsetto that’s doing the crooning.

The level of sophistication -- arrangements with subtle details, the frequency of slow tempos, a couple well-trodden motifs -- lends itself to a couple tepid tunes, but Ne-Yo remains a premier source of R&B that is both traditional and contemporary.

This album shows that Ne-Yo is that word that gets bounded around far too often these days - GENIUS!

While Ne-Yo amps up his ambitions here, it's not quite the sequel to Thriller Ne-Yo may have wanted.

Ne-Yo's latest album, Libra Scale, isn't your normal album. It is a concept album based upon three average Joes turned super heroes who are granted money, power, and fame but in return, they can't fall in love with any of the women they meet or sleep with.

Ultimately, it’s admirable that Ne-Yo felt the need to take listeners on an out-of-this-world ride, but he’s at his best when sticking closer to home.

The only thing this concept album from the consummately smooth and shining light of modern-day soul is lacking is a clincher track like Closer.

Libra Scale, with its lyrically conceptual framework and ceaselessly enjoyable production, is a masterful blend of new-age contemporary R&B with a classic appeal.

The album concept is a refreshing pull away from the spoon fed-nature of R&B music of the past two years

This was the first time I could listen to a Ne-Yo CD from front to back without skipping a single song.

It's an interesting concept, though a more fitting one would probably be where the talented songwriter channels his respect for Michael Jackson into a collection that honors him in the best way possible.
