Lemonade and Brownies
| Sugar RayLemonade and Brownies
Lemonade and Brownies is the debut studio album by the American rock band Sugar Ray. It was produced by the band's director friend Joseph McGinty "McG" Nichol and DJ Lethal and released on April 4, 1995 by Atlantic Records. Actress Nicole Eggert is featured on the cover. Even though the album did not chart and was a commercial and critical failure for Atlantic Records, the band stayed on the label, going on to huge success. -Wikipedia

Sputnik Music
"Ten Seconds Down" keeps things going, but "Dance Party USA" just feels lackluster. Around the last area of the album, the novelty wears off and the songs lose focus, which is probably due to the realization that a lot of this is essentially almost rap-rock as far as lyrical quality goes.

Heavy Blog Is Heavy
One thing that the band demonstrated on this album was their ability to craft tunes that appeal to our easiest sensibilities; the lyrics are singalong, the choruses are memorable and the grooves and riffs are infectious.
-
LA Times
With the album's cheesecake artwork and infantile, toilet-humor title, it's clear Sugar Ray is factoring its appeal down to lowest denominators with this debut CD. What's most galling about "Lemonade and Brownies" is how cannily it is put together to seduce young headbangers and hip-hoppers.

Metal Music Archives
Due to this eclectic mix, there are some ideas that work and some that don't. "Hold Your Eyes" is surprisingly one of the best songs on the album with an infectiously catchy hand-clapping beat and a bluesy slap bass. If you're looking for some eclectic funk metal, this is a great album.

All Music
Sugar Ray's major-label debut is a competent set of alternative funk/metal, though nothing on Lemonade & Brownies is particularly distinctive.

It showcases Sugar Ray in their most youthful and idealistic phase. Their major-label debut is a competent set of Alternative Funk/Metal, with a few Punk anthems to boot. Even though the album did not chart, the band stayed on the label going on to huge success a few years later.

Woodwind Brasswind
At Sugar Ray's earliest conception, they were a Rock/Metal band at heart, with enough goofy energy to land them a deal with Atlantic and a debut record produced by DJ Lethal.

The Fire Note
Here is one Sugar Ray record that I have always liked. Lemonade and Brownies was released in 1995, and it showcases Sugar Ray in their most youthful and idealistic phase. Their major-label debut is a mixed set of Alternative Funk/Metal, highlighted by “Mean Machine.”

What a fat Rock tone and some bad ass riffs ala 10 Seconds Down, Mean Machine. All you ever hear is their When its Over material but man this early stuff is a must have. The whole cd is pretty good actually and worth a nod.
