Laundry Service

Laundry Service (Spanish: Servicio de Lavander a) is the fifth studio album by Colombian singer and songwriter Shakira, globally released on 13 November 2001 by Epic Records. It is her first album to be primarily recorded in English. After the release of her fourth studio album D nde Est n los Ladrones , which became a success in Latin America, Shakira was encouraged by American singer Gloria Estefan to record songs in English as she believed the singer had the potential to crossover into the English-language pop market.-Wikipedia

  • Rolling Stone

On the spanish-language albums that elevated her to Latin-rock-goddess status, Shakira Mebarak sounded playful, bohemian and rebellious. On her English-language debut, she sounds downright silly, but the blame is not entirely hers.

While no one could claim Laundry Service was a groundbreaking work of art, its ramshackle production and imponderable lyrics are striking and unique.

Her distinct brand of Latin pop features dynamic dance beats fronted by an assertive, folk-rock vocal style.

Shakira's Laundry Service was a game-changer. The Colombian star's first bilingual (Spanish and English) album not only became her best-selling set, but it also took her career to another level.

Dónde Están los Ladrones? remains Shakira's most essential album, but Laundry Service is an excellent English-language debut for the South American vocalist.

But I guess you must have lost your confidence somewhere, because Laundry Service does not sound like the kind of album you really wanted to make. It's far too glossy, too poppy, too too everything.

Colombian superstar Shakira released her first English-language album, Laundry Service, 15 years ago on Nov. 13, 2001. At the time, she was already one of the biggest acts for Latinos and Latin America, but Laundry made her a crossover success on a worldwide scale with lead single "Whenever, Wherever."

Even though each song sounds different, the album as a whole is very cohesive. Despite the two different languages, I think that this album can be enjoyed by anyone.

The line between fascinatingly strange and offputtingly weird is a thin one, and Laundry Service crosses it far too often to be considered a great album.

Indeed, only established industry colossi Garth Brooks and Britney could prevent Laundry Service entering the US album charts at No 1, and it doesn't take the shrewdest industry analyst to predict that it might well end the year as the biggest-selling album of 2002, so assuredly does Shakira transcend global musical boundaries.

  • MUSIC CRITIC

Laundry Service has some great songs on it but isn't the classic that her credentials might have promised. The truth is that as an album it has more in common with Star Trek movies than multi-million selling albums.

As the album closes with another spunky Punk tango, it brings the cycle full circle, allowing all of the international flavors to spin, tumble and bleed together in a colorful mixed load of musical wash.
