  • The Guardian

With stripped-back and beefed-up takes on each track, Keys’s eighth album should be two for the price of one – but not all songs work both ways.

Her eighth album is her most ambitious to date, going from torch ballads to dance tracks and spanning decades with ease.

The singer has been stunningly prolific in the past year or so, and – for better or worse – this sprawling record is ideal for the streaming era.

Over the years, Keys has transformed herself while exploring different sides of her talent but in “KEYS” her confidence is apparent.

Two of Keys' most moving vocal performances are contained in "Is It Insane," an anguished torch song done acoustic jazz-trio style, and "Love When You Call My Name," a levitating ballad out of time.

A huge undertaking, ‘KEYS’ seems to find the American artist both embodying and rebelling against her own archetypes. Literate and honest, it doesn’t always connect, yet with 90 minutes of music to explore it’s a project that demands time and patience to truly absorb. Eschewing definitions, Alicia Keys seems to spin the wheel once more – where she goes next is entirely up to her.

There’s a really good album drowning in all this excess. I’m just not sure most listeners will stick around to find it.

An experimental double record that stops short of reaching its tall ambitions.

There are no bad songs on KEYS, but it is a hella long album that feels like listening to the same album on repeat by track seventeen. Alicia did throw in a couple of Unlocked songs that are not from this album and that helped break up that feeling of repetition, but it was definitely still there.

Overall, ‘KEYS’ is an album like no other in today’s generation. Not many artists would be capable of creating this type of project. Alicia executes it very well. The highs on this project reach the sky, and the lows don’t leave you too underwhelmed. The quality of instrumentation pouring out of the music is outstanding. With ‘KEYS’ Alicia reminds the world how much of a special talent she truly is.
