Kamikaze brought forth a spontaneity unfamiliar to an Eminem fan, from its unexpected release to its reinvigorated aura of confidence. Is it Eminem’s best album? In truth, it doesn’t matter, nor should he be doomed to forever do battle against himself. All I know is this: where the legacy of Slim Shady is concerned, it remains wise to stand on the right side of history.

Eminem struggles to reconcile with that shift on Kamikaze, though he inevitably succeeds more often than on the catastrophic Revival. Scholars may not point to Kamikaze as the moment Eminem wrenched back his career from the hands of bloodthirsty journalists—but they also won’t pinpoint it as the moment he lost the fight entirely.

Immaturity has been a part of Eminem’s brand for as long as I can remember. Kamikaze further proves that Eminem is hip-hop’s Peter Pan and it’s past time to grow up. The fairy dust is no longer helping him fly and the crash is painful to watch.

“Kamikaze” is not a party album. It’s often times a moody album, but like it or not that’s also when Marshall Mathers can be at his most honest and lyrically sharpest. It’s always fun to hear him throw daggers at pop culture figures, but he never cuts quite as deeply as when he aims at his own shortcomings. It’s undoubtedly painful to him and perhaps even painful to listen to, but he renews himself and his career through cathartic releases such as this.

While Kamikaze is certainly a better offering from Eminem compared to his past 3 or 4 albums, this is still a far-cry from the incredible early work of this groundbreaking artist. Cheap productions and a contrived effort to rekindle his previous flow and charisma fails to feel like anything but a middle-aged Eminem angry at the world and a music scene that’s moved on from his era.

No matter how many people try to discredit him, he shows here that his legacy as one of the greatest rappers of all time is still intact, and for good reason. Still – as his career winds down, it’s getting to the point where he should be a lot more careful about what he puts out there.
