  • All Music

Just Go, slightly more so than Coming Home, tends to be a happy (and comforting) medium between Richie's familiar approach and contemporary R&B.

I must admit that Just Go is start-to-finish hooky and generally well-written and performed.

. . . the old guy falls into a bit of a midtempo rut.

1/13/2007. It's been produced to the lushest AOR standards by an array of expensive talent, including Stargate and Akon, and finds Richie in reliably smooth voice, ruminating placidly about love. . . . he's rarely sounded so unruffled. What would it be like if he let go a bit?

. . . this album is tolerably unremarkable. There are brief moments of interest (mainly 'Forever' and 'Into You Deep'), but these fourteen tracks are chiefly smooth, rhythm 'n' pop numbers with generic keyboard riffs and empty sentiments - although Richie's voice still sounds surprisingly full-bodied and resonant in places.

Though his voice is classic, Just Go finds Lionel Richie staying modern through co-writers and collaborators -- he joins with hot-handed Akon and Dutch pop singer Trijntje Oosterhuis. . . . this album has the big ballads that defined his late career, even if it lacks the energy that infused his early work.

Introducing a 60-year-old artist to a younger audience with new material is asking for a lot, but Richie's devoted fanbase will find plenty to like. Just Go, slightly more so than Coming Home, tends to be a happy (and comforting) medium between Richie's familiar approach and contemporary R&B.

The propulsive melodies on a solid third of Just Go have a very guilty-pleasure quotient. . . . but it’s a good time nonetheless.

On his ninth studio album, undifferentiated swaths of midtempo digital groove leave one longing for the (relative) analog authenticity of vintage Lionel. And nothing here provokes much dancing on the ceiling, let alone on the rec-room carpet . . . .

Just Go is start-to-finish hooky and generally well-written and performed. And while the album is generic enough that it could have been issued by any of a couple of dozen relatively faceless young R&B singers occupying urban radio in 2009, Richie should receive the credit for putting the pieces together and delivering an album that is immensely listenable, if not particularly distinctive. Moderately recommended.

3/14/2009. Slow jams such as "I'm in Love" are as interchangeable as they are maudlin, his vocals remain drearily airy throughout, and only the Euro-trancey "Somewhere in London" raises the musical pulse. Still, the lyrics intermittently entertain . . . .

Every track on Just Go is a potential hit single; most of these songs are a good cut above average Top 40 fare and a solid affirmation of Richie's continued strength as master of the romantic song.

. . . Richie doesn't sound out of his element singing on tracks provided by contemporary R&B hit makers, complete with up-to-the-minute production by Stargate and the team of Tricky and The-Dream.

In Just Go, Richie attempts to wow his daughter's generation by teaming with hip-hop hook masters Akon and Ne-Yo, and he succeeds very well.
