janet

Janet (stylized as janet.) is the fifth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson, released on May 18, 1993, by Virgin Records America. Prior to its release, Jackson was at the center of a high-profile bidding war over her recording contract. In 1991, her original label A&M sought to renew her contract, while others, such as Atlantic, Capitol, and Virgin all vied to sign her. After meeting with Virgin owner Richard Branson, she signed with the label. A pop and R&B record, Janet incorporated hip hop, opera, house and jazz, eliminating the rigid, industrial sound of her previous records.-Wikipedia

May 18, 2013. . . . Janet Jackson's "janet.," which turns 20 on May 18, may be her real creative triumph.

. . . with janet., she delivered a respectable offering that, although not as strong as either Control or Nation, has many strong points.

June 24, 1993. Janet. touches R&B, hip-hop, soul, funk, rock, house, jazz and opera with the singer’s pop sensibility. The mix may lack purity, but the ambitious choices and flexibility leave a bold impression.

February 17, 2008. The mother of eclectic, genre-hopping albums by Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, and Fergie, janet. incorporates new jack swing, house, pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, and even opera, but the album’s range of styles isn’t jarring in the least.

May 4, 2018. Easily one of Janet’s most beloved albums, janet is home to some of Ms. Jackson’s biggest records. As a collection of hits, it’s peerless. As an overall album, though, the number of tracks and the almost oppressive number of interludes (one after almost every song!) make for a really exhaustive listen.

May 17, 2018. On its release 25 years ago, on May 18, 1993, there was nothing lower-case about Janet Jackson’s album “janet.” except its title. No longer a modestly successful R&B singer, she was a major crossover talent whose commercial profile had begun to rival that of her older brother Michael.

  • Albumism

May 16, 2018. On first sight, the track listing reveals 26 songs—a veritable marathon of sensual R&B. But closer inspection finds 14 of these are slight, unnecessary interludes or segues.

July 7, 2015. In a world where it’s easier than ever to filter, crop, or edit oneself, being authentic has suddenly become some impossible-to-hit standard, necessary to embody in order to be taken seriously. It hit that standard. By being her most authentic and bare self, Jackson created her most influential work. That’s not to say that Janet is one of the best R&B albums out there, because it isn’t.

This achievement is Janet's, period--those who disagree should send me the name of that hot number in the S.O.S. Band they couldn't wait to boff. Better nose than Michael, better navel than Madonna, better sex than either.
